1 am deeply indebted to Dr. Will Edington for some of his booklets relating the history of the Indiana Academy of Science. In years past, he has written memorial biographies of members of the Academy. In his articles I find the names of outstanding DePauw scientists. Dr. J.P.D. John, Dr. Truman G. Yuncker, Dr. William Blanchard. Dr. Edington, a former member of the DePauw faculty, is also a former President of the Indiana Academy of Science. 000 I believe that June held to its tradition of being the month of brides, at least in Greencastle. During the past thirty days, a total of 36 couples, or 72 people, filed applications for marriage licenses in the office of County Clerk Johnny Masten. Of course, on the other hand, several divorce suits were filed in

the Putnam Circuit Court during the same period of time. 000 It hardly seems possible that 75 more persons have died in Indiana highway traffic accidents than at the same time last year. Eleven deaths on Hoosier roads were recorded during the weekend making the 1973 toll so far this year 790. With the holiday coming up tomorrow, I am afraid that the toll will pass the 800-mark and that certainly isn’t good. 000 Yesterday in passing: Received a note from Joan Ash Gallup with a check enclosed for the renewal of her Banner-Graphic. Joan now resides on Route 1, Box 11, Zalfo Springs, Florida 33890. Nice to hear from you, Joan. 000 Bud and Irene Wise were due to return home this afternoon following a motor trip to Tennessee. 000 Bill and Marilyn Lawrence and children are here from Newfoundland, New Jersey, visiting Bill’s parents, William and Esther Lawrence, 109 East Washington Street. 000 Tomorrow is the Fourth of July. Fly Old Glory and remember that the Declaration of Independence was signed 197 years ago, July 4, 1776. 000 My sympathy goes out to my friend. Bill Padgett, in the passing of his wife, Frances. 000 Conversed with Norm Handy and Bud Long in the Post Office. 000 Certainly appreciated a little personal note from Edith Browning. 000 Ward and Esther Mayhall, among others, enjoyed a trip to Hawaii, but Ward didn’t let me know. Plan Commission Ordinance Passed
After considerable discussion in a crowded Commissioner’s Courtroom, the Putnam County Board of Commissioners voted to create a Putnam County Plan Commission. The commissioners were prepared to pass the ordinance creating the county commission at their last regularmeeting June 18 but after hearing considerable opposition to the plan they decided to look into the matter further. The majority of the people in the audience came prepared to make statements of support of passage of the County Plan Commission ordinance. Led by Jack Torr, the group presented the commissioners with a written summary of information they were about to present. Torr read a 10 point summary of the benefits of establishing a planning commission. They were as follows: 1.)
