Soviet Press Creates Aura

Of Triumph For Brezhnev

By WILLI A M L^ RYAN A P Special Correspondent The Soviet press has created an aura of triumph for Leonid I .• Brezhnev on his return from his prospecting trip to the goldfields of capitalism. The enormous press coverage suggests to Russians that their chiefs summitry was the biggest thing since the Bolshevik revolution. That could leave many a Russian puzzled. It should present some mysteries for knowledgeable Americans as well. “As you know, two years ago the 24th Congress of our ruling party, the Communist party of the Soviet Union, approved the Soviet peace program, which is a concrete embodiment of the policy of peaceful coexistence in modern conditions,” said Brezhnev on U.S. television. He likely was aware few Americans knew anything of the sort. But if Americans take his word for it, that the long centerpiece report Brezhnev laid down at that Congress was the source of this whole peace offensive, it makes for some int e r e s t i n g reflections about Brezhnev 1971 and Brezhnev 1973. Just a few examples: Brezhnev industriously courted every U.S. capitalist within reach in his U.S. week, admiring the American system’s efficiency and know-how and expressing hopes of concluding big deals. What did he have to say about the U.S. system in 1971 when, according to him, his current foreign policy was being drawn up? “The general crisis of capitalism has continued to deepen," he said in the report that was the basis of his current program. “Even the most developed capitalist states are not free from grave economic upheavals. The U.S.A. for example, has been floundering in one of its economic crises for almost two years." Brezhnev told the American public that patience and understanding are needed to promote peace. What sort of understanding of the U.S. “imperialists" did he display in that 1971 program speech? “The imperialists are prepared to commit any crime in I* 180 To 240 May Be Killed Over Fourth CHICAGO (AP) — The National Safety Council estimates that between 180 and 240 persons may be killed in traffic accidents during the Fourth of July holiday. The estimate covers the period from 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, to midnight Wednesay, July 4, in each daylight time zone. The six hours of Tuesday are included to account for those leaving on trips immediately after work. During the same 30-hour period, the council estimated 10,000 to 12,000 persons may suffer disabling injuries in motor traffic accidents. It defines disabling injuries as those requiring hospital care beyond the day of the accident. The last time Independence Day fell on Wednesday was in 1962. There were 146 fatalities that year.

their efforts to preserve and re- speech of 1971, Brezhnev said store their domination of peo- Soviet policies meant “fresh pies in ... countries that are es- prospects have opened up for caping from the grip of capital- the triumph of socialism all ist exploitation....” Brezhnev over the world, told the Americans the cold “The full triumph of the sowar was over. Does this sug- cialist cause all over the world gest calling it quits in the war 4 is inevitable,” he said. “And of ideology? we shall not spare ourselves in In that same “program” the fight for this triumph.” WORRY CLINIC George W. Lorna almost died! But thousands of other children (as well as adults) do so. just because they weren’t trained in how to solve the everyday problems of life. You parents should take the tests below and see if you can rate “Superior” thereon! CASE X-546: Lorna B., aged 9, is an only child. “Dr. Crane,” her grandfather protested, “Lorna almost drowned while attending a picnic. “For it was warm weather and the children began wading in what seemed to be a shallow stream. “But during a previous high water mark, it must have eroded some deep holes. “For Lorna stepped off into one. “Since she couldn’t swim, she was in a panic, choking on water as she kept rising and sinking. “A Boy Scout finally rescued her, but she was then unconscious, so he had to perform mout h-to-mouth resuscitation to get her breathing again. “Dr. Crane, please warn all parents to vaccinate their children against these common dangers!” TESTS OF PARENTS If you wish to rate a “Superior” or “Very Superior” rating on my “Test for Parents” cited below, then you should 4 . (1) See that your children all learn to swim, at least by the time they enter grammar school. Either send them to the "Y” where they can be taught, or else tutor them yourself. If you decide to do the teaching, you can begin at home in your own bathtub. Fill it with about one foot of water. Now urge your youngster to take a few deep breaths; then hold the last one and merely submerge his face under water while you start counting slowly out loud. That first time, he may lift his face by the time you say “one-two-three,” so be liberal with praise. Then have him try it again, to see if he can stay under till you at least count off 10 seconds.

For this fear of submerging the face is the first hurdle to overcome. Then go to Step No. 2, which consists of letting him float face down in the water, while you again start counting. When you go to the beach, extend this to step No. 3, where he dog paddles a few strokes with face submerged, but always in shallow water where his hands reach the bottom as he lies face down. Step No. 4, involves having him stand erect, then as you give the signal, he falls face downward but holds his breath. He will probably go completely underneath but instantly his body will rise and he'll get the “feel” of the buoyancy the water offers. Now count while he tries to dog paddle with face submerged. Step No. 5 involves the same but let him lift his face out of the water and breath as he dog paddles. Even if he can swim but a few feet, that is usually enough to get a person back to shallower water when he steps into a deep hole. Or to the overturned boat, to which he can cling till help arrives. (2) Teach your kiddies how to smother fire if their clothes get ignited. (3) And how to light a match, Japanese fashion, by pushing it away from the body. (4) Same for whittling with a jackknife. For further test items, send for my “Tests for Parents,” enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 25 cents. Let your kiddies rate you, too!
