Men’s Softball League Results Moore’s Bar Stuns IGA In Tenth Inning, 5-4
Moore’s Bar remained unbeaten in softball action Thursday evening but they had to go to great lengths to accomplish it. Moore’s made an almost impossible comeback in the bottom of the tenth inning as they scored four runs to squeak past a stubborn Greencastle IGA team. 5-4. IGA, which played nearperfect ball against Moore’s
for nine innings, capitalized on three Moore’s errors in the tenth to score three runs and take a 4-1 lead. After loading the bases, IGA’s Ranes hit a line drive to the second baseman but he fumbled the ball and Bachelor scored from third base. Then Hammond and Anderson scored on passed balls to give the IGA team a three-run margin over Moore’s.
In the bottom of the tenth, IGA retired the first two batters and seemingly had the victory sewed up. But pitcher Larry Hammond had troubles with his control and walked in three runs. Moore’s Larry Bottorff then scored the winning run on a single to left field by C. Brown. The leading hitter for Moore’s was Pete Norris with three doubles and a single.
“We’re Still Running Too Fast”—Rutherford
MOUNT POCONO Pa (AP) “We’re still running too fast,” says Johnny Rutherford. “We need to do some really serious thinking about race speeds.” Rutherford, a 35-year-old speedster from Fort Worth, Tex., watched at Pocono International Raceway Thursday as drivers tore around the 2.5 mile
tri-oval at lap speeds over 185 miles an hour. “What they did wasn’t a drop in the bucket,” the Texan said referring to post-Indianapolis rules changes that clipped nine inches off the rear-mounted wings of the open-cockpit, single-seater racers he and other championship drivers will wheel in the $400,000 Schaefer

500-mile race July 1. “The reduction in wing size was supposed to have cut speeds a bit,” Rutherford said. “But look at those guys go out there. You can hardly tell the difference from Indianapolis. “This is a reasonably safe race track, but before we get back to Indianapolis next year, something more concrete will have to be done to reduce speeds." Rutherford won the Indianapolis pole position with a 10-mile ride at 198.413 m.p.h. And he’ll be a contender for similar honors Saturday when the process of selecting 33 starters for the Schaefer 500 begins. That is, if he can build his speed a bit more. Best practice lap Thursday was 183.577 m.p.h, far off that of the flying Unser brothers, Bobby and Al. and such noteables as Mike Mosley and the recent Indianapolis winner Gordon Johncock. They whipped around with speeds in excess of 186 m.p.h “It doesn’t worry me," Rutherford said. “I wanted the pole position at Indianapolis because it means something to a driver. In other races, however, all you need is a good start up front.” With a full day of practice remaining yesterday, 22 drivers already had exceeded 180 m.p.h. laps. That compares with only eight who qualified at that speed or better for last year’s Schaefer
500.
Bobby Unser holds the Pocono qualifying record, 189.210 m.p.h. Rutherford believes a speed of 191-192 will be needed to win Saturday’s No. 1 starting
spot.
Norris also scored two runs during the game with one of them coming in the sixth inning to tie the contest at 1-1. The winning pitcher for Moore’s was Jack Allen. Allen pitched the entire game and recorded nine strikeouts while limiting IGA to only two hits. The loser for IGA was Larry Hammond. The victory gives Moore’s a 3-0 record while IGA’s season mark fell to 1-3. The Fillmore-Buis Fertilizer game that was scheduled for last Thursday night was postponed because of rain.
