Judge Sets Hearing Date For Ozark Strike
Bombing Renewal May Be Recommended
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A federal judge has set a Friday hearing on a request by strikebound Ozark Air Lines that pilots be forced to cross picket lines set up by striking mechanics. * U.S. District Court Judge James H. Meredith refused to act Monday on Ozark’s request for a permanent injunction which would prohibit pilots from honoring the picket lines. The hearing date falls one
day after Ozark had planned to resume limited service to nine cities in Missouri and Illinois. The two-month-old strike by the 560-member Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association has idled Ozark operations in 62 cities and 15 states. The airline announced earlier this month that it planned to resume limited service despite the strike. However, the Air Line Pilots Association told the
company last week that pilots and stewardesses would remain neutral in the strike and not cross the picket lines. An Ozark spokesman said Monday if Meredith acts favorably on the request for an injunction Friday, the limited schedule could still be put into effect early next week. Talks between the airline and the striking mechanics union have been underway in Washington for the past two weeks.
but a union official said there were still major differences on the question of wages and pension benefits. The mechanics, who walked off the job April 19th, more than a year after their old contract had expired, have demanded an hourly wage of $6.82. The company’s last reported offer was $6.80 an hour. Under the old contract the top mechanics’ wage was $6.02 an hour.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Def e n s e Secretary-designate James R. Schlesinger says he might recommend renewed American bombing of North Vietnam if Hanoi mounts a threatening offensive against South Vietnam. “I can envisage circumstances under which there
could be a resumption of the bombing,” he said Monday. Schlesinger testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee which is expected to take several days before voting on his nomination. Little opposition is anticipated. Schlesinger, 44, is the youngest man ever named to be De-
fense chief. Currently, he is director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Though leaving open the possibility of renewed bombing of North Vietnam, he indicated in his testimony a diminishing enthusiasm for continued runs by B52 bombers over Cambodia. There are about 40 B52 mis-
sions over that country each day. While emphasizing it is unlikely that North Vietnamese actions could bring about a resumption of American air strikes over North Vietnam, Schlesinger said the raids have had the “reflective way of delivering a message in the past."
