Eagles Upend Athenians, 5-2

A two-run blast by Rick Booe in the first inning and a solo home run by Dale Mendenhall in the fifth inning sparked South Putnam’s baseball team to a 5-2 victory over Crawfordsville’s Athenians last Thursday afternoon. The Eagles, who had lost two games in a row last week, came back against the Athenians to play error-less ball and limit the powerful Crawfordsville team to five hits. The winning pitcher for South Putnam’s ball club was Randy Williams. Williams had five strikeouts against the Athenians and allowed only two walks enroute to his eighth win of the year against three losses. The loser for Crawfordsville was Baldwin. After trailing South Put-

nam 2-0 early in the contest, the Athenians tied the game when R. Shelton hit a tworun homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. But the Eagles came right back to take a one-run lead on Mendenhall’s homer in the fifth inning and then added two more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Craig Sibbitt and an error by the Athenians to gain their eleventh victory of the season. The Eagles’ overall record now stands at 11-7. Their next games will be against West Central Conference rival Monrovia next Tuesday afternoon and then against Clinton’s Wildcats on Saturday, May 26, in a varsity and reserve doubleheader. The WCC title is still undecided concerning its location and time while next Saturday’s game will be held at Clinton and will begin at 1:00 p.m.
