"Couldn’t Communicate With Administration’ USL’s Shipley Resigns As Head Coach

Practice Sessions Increase As Time Trials Near End

Indianapolis, Ind., May -- After a brief lull in track activities following the first week-end of time trials, the tempo of daily practice sessions is increasing steadily in preparation for final attempts on Saturday and Sunday (May 19-20) to win starting positions in the 57th annual Indianapolis 500-mile race on May 28. Thirty drivers already are

qualified and, after three more complete their four-lap runs, other drivers will be required to exceed the speed of one or more of the successful 33 entrants in order to earn a place in the Race Day lineup behind the Cadillac Eldorado pace car. Qualifying attempts will be permitted on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from noon until 6

p.m. (all times Eastern Standard) with practice permitted on eachday as early as 9 a.m. Gates to the Speedway grounds will be opened at the same hour with a $2 daily admission charge. All five former Indianapolis winners entered again this year already have qualified. One of them, however, is in a very precarious position -- A.J. Foyt, seeking an unprecedented fourth victory here. National Champion Joe Leonard’s starting spot also is in some danger. Former winners sure of starting positions are A1 and Bobby Unser, Mark Donohue and Mario Andretti.

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Beryl Shipley, beleaguered by an NCAA investigation and suspended by the Southland Conference for calling it a “Mickey Mouse league,” resigned Wednesday after 16 years as head basketball coach at Southwestern Louisiana. He said it was because he was unable to communicate with the university administration. Shipley’s Ragin’ Cajun teams compiled a 296-129 record during his tenure, and were ranked among the nation’s best in his last two years when the school was moving up to major college status. Among the players he recruited and coached was guard

Dwight Lamar, who led the nation in scoring in both the college and university divisions and was the first player selected in the regular American Basketball Association draft. At a news conference, Shipley said he resigned because of salary problems and a general breakdown of communications with the university administration. “The straw that broke the camel’s back was that 1 asked the administration what my salary would be for the fiscal year which begins on July 1, and 1 was told by President Clyde Rougeou that it would be impossible to get that information at this time,” said Shipley. His salary was $16,800 last

year. Shipley said he was not asked to resign and denied that his decision to quit had anything to do with present or pending difficulties with the Southland Conference or the NCAA. However, in response to a question, he acknowledged that it was “a possibility” the university wanted him to resign. The NCAA has lodged more than 100 allegations against the basketball program directed by Shipley, most of them concerning recruiting. However, the school went into court and has been successful in efforts to delay replying to the charges. As an example of “a total lack of communication between Beryl Shipley and the adminis-

tration,” Shipley said the school knew as early as March 30 that the Southland Conference was planning to suspend him, but did not tell him. The suspension, which came April 28, was to be in force until he apologized for calling the

league “Mickey Mouse” because it refrained from certifying a conference basketball champion since several member schools were being investigated by the NCAA. Southwestern had a 12-0 conference record.

HOUSTON (AP) - There’s one good thing about going on the road for Atlanta Braves’ home run slugger Hank Aaron—ht doesn't have to open his mail. Aaron, who is closing in on Babe Ruth’s career home run record of 714, is getting a steady stream of hate mail. “If I was white, all America would be proud of me,” Aaron

said. “But I am black. There are some sick people in this world. Or else I wouldn’t get the mail I do. These are sick people who thrive on trying to make other people miserable.” “I can’t do anything about the mail,” said Aaron, here with the Braves for a series with the Houston Astros. “I'd say that the ratio is 60-40. that 60 per cent of it is of a racist nature.
