Golda Goes Thirsty for Science

THIRSTY CAMEL — When Golda is serious about drinking she can take on about 43 gallons of water in five minutes. Golda is helping Dr. Reuben Yagil, seen here holding the bucket, study

the effects of dehydration.

BEERSHEBA, Israel (AP) — Ever wonder why a camel can go two weeks without a drink? In the Negev Desert a camel named Golda — after Israel's Premier Golda Meir — is helping an Israeli expert find the answer. The secret of the humpbacked ship of the desert seems to be connected with its red blood cells, says Dr. Reuben Yagil. When a human's body starts dehydrating from thirst and heat, says Yagil, veterinarian at Israel’s Institute for Arid Zone Research, the red blood cells stop working as the salt content of the blood rises The same goes for most animals. But Golda s red cells — and presumably those of all camels — can stand a far denser saline solution. Human and animal cells stop working at 1.5 per

cent salinity, but in lab tests on Golda s red cells it took a solution of up to 20 per cent salinity before changes in the membranes were noted. “We haven’t tested Golda up to her limit, of course — we are very fond of her,” said Yagil. The limit would be death. “When the tests are over we will keep her as a pet.” The South African-born veterinarian said the salinity findings were new discoveries in the camel field. His experiments also confirmed earlier conclusions on why camels can drink much larger amounts of water than other animals, with no ill effects. Golda, he said, can drink 190 liters of water — almost 43 American gallons — in five minutes. And she regularly guzzles up to 60 liters or almost 16 gallons in one minute. Not that she gets the chance

very often. For the tests, Yagil has been dehydrating his experimental camel for five months, rationing her to 10 1/2 gallons a week. As a slimming treatment, the water rationing is remarkable. Golda loses up to 220 pounds a week in weight, but puts some back on when she drinks. Normally, she weighs in at a trim 1,320 pounds “Now, at the end of five months, she has lost almost 200 kilograms,” said Yagil. That’s 440 pounds. “She is always thirsty, but otherwise she is in fine condition.’’ Drinking water, however, decreases the saline solution of the blood, and if it is thinned out too drastically in a human or an ordinary animal, the red cells burst. A camel, however, can fill itself up like a car’s gas tank because it is about five times as

tough as a human in this respect. And a dehydrated camel is even more resistant. “That is one of the reasons we call her Golda," said Yagil. ‘‘No disrespect to the prime minister — on the contrary. This camel can stand up to all sorts of hardship and so does Mrs. Meir.” Mrs. Meir is 75- Golda the camel is 12. Yagil bought her at a camel auction in the Arab market of Beersheba in 1969 for $166. Camel prices, like everything else, have gone up in Israel and Yagil said she would cost more than twice as much today. Like a cow, or even a giraffe, a camel is a ruminant or cudchewing animal, but a camel has only three chambers in its stomach while other ruminants have four. Yagil, 38, is an old hand in the desert. He came to Israel in 1956, just in time to join the army and fight in the Suez war in the sands of Sinai. He studied later at Utrecht in Holland. Do his tests aim at developing some sort of super camel for Israel? “No,” he answered. “It is just research, like looking for the source of the Nile.”

The San Francisco Symphony will tour the Soviet Union in June, under the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Cultural Exchange Agreement. Conducted by Seiji Ozawa, with guest piano soloist Andre

Watts, the orchestra will perform 11 to 12 concerts during the 16-<lay tour. Opening concert will be in Leningrad with others in Vilnius and Moscow. The orchestra is scheduled to make a private tour of Western

Europe in the spring.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Although he has been increasingly critical of Sen. Birch Bayh, D-Ind., recently, Lt. Gov. Robert Orr says this is no indication he is thinking of running for the GOP U. S. Senate nomination next summer. Orr says his recent attacks on Bayh’s attendance record in Congress may have been misunderstood. “We have been asked by state Republican headquarters to do everything we can to point out the frailities of the opposition," he explained during an interview. “I'd been doing this all along during the Lincoln Day dinner period.” Orr said that when he jumped on the junior senator “it was because he was down on my hometown (Evansville). 1 thought it would be kind of

fun to let him know we’d been watching what he’s been doing. As a result, a lot of people asked him why he wasn’t in Washington taking care of his business." Hoosier Republicans reportedly are having a hard time finding anyone to challenge Bayh, a formidable vote-getter, so the field could be open to a man like Orr, who is well known around the state. Orr has shrugged off reports he might run but, at the same time, says “you never rule out anything altogether. In politics you never know what’s going to happen next. A year ago....I had no idea I would be sitting here today. “But I’ve got my job here to do and it’s a very full-time job. No, I think 1 need to be thinking of my duty here."
