Mays Will Test Himself After 15-Day Wait
Shoulder Injury Could Quicken End To Willie Mays’ Career
By Will Grimsley AP Special Correspondent NEW YORK AP-Willie Mays said yesterday, “When 1 get ready to retire, the world will know about it the same time 1 do - 1 won’t hide anything. I’ll announce it immediately.” It won’t be today, it won’t be tomorrow, the 42-year-old New York Mets’ all-time great insisted. It won’t be until after he has completed 15 days on the disabled list because of a painful right shoulder.
“When I come back, if 1 find 1 can’t swing, can’t throw and can’t run, then I’ll throw in the towel,” he added. “Not before. First, I must be sure 1 can no longer be of any value to the team. “Baseball means a great deal to me. 1 still have a 10-year contract with the Mets, so I’m not thinking yet about leaving base-

ball. “New York is a big town. They’re not going to be satisfied with me playing on my record. 1 don’t intend to embarrass myself or the team.” He added, however, that this would be his last season as a player. “It’s tough to keep getting up and down. There is pain and
ache. When you ache, it’s not as much fun.” Mays’ comments were made when he dropped by Shea Stadium to pick up some mail. He drove up in a pink Imperial with California license plates which read “Say Heay.” Mays’ comments were made when he dropped by. Mays was disturbed by news-
paper reports that he was on the verge of retirement and that he planned to leave baseball completely to oversee his successful real estate interests on the Pacific Coast. “In the first place I’m not sure I could retire right this minute if I wanted to,” he said. “I am still a player and on the disabled list.” The 15-day period, whch went
into effect Sunday, will end May
27.
The shoulder injury, Willie said, is not a new one. The joint first started hurting three years ago when he was with San Francisco. “It’s a form of tendonitis - a pull,” he explained. Mays was signed by the old New York Giants in 1951, became a part of the franchise
move to San Francisco in 1958 and returned to New York as a Met in a deal a year ago. H* is off to a disappointing start this year: a batting average of .108 with only four hits in four weeks
of action.
Mays is a proud man. He intimated he would not be content to stay around and draw his $165,000 a year salary just for sentiment’s sake.

Smaltz, Jona Braden and Holley Knights, and Lorie Bitzer and Sue Ross swept the doubles competition from the Patriots. Against Lebanon, Greencastle had a near perfect day as Smaltz, Pershing, Tinker Laramore, Judy Smaltz, and Braden won their singles matches. Once again the Cubs took all of the doubles matches to easily overcome Lebanon’s GAA team. Greencastle’s GAA tennis team will see action again this week when they take on Terre Haute South’s netters this Thursday. The match will be held at Terre Haute. Earlier last week, the doubles team of Ross and Bitzer defeated Crawfordsville 8-0 and Terre Haute South 8-6, 7-5 to win the sectional championship and advance to the state regional meet that will be held this Saturday. The sectional meet was held at Greencastle on May 8th and 10th with Terre Haute North, Crawfordsville, Terre Haute South, and Greencastle participating. Ross and Bitzer were the only members of Greencastle’s tennis team to advance to the regional meet.

Six Teams Named For Regional Baseball Tourney
Sullivan’s baseball team remained unbeaten in Western Indiana Conference play last Monday afternoon as the Golden Arrows handed Greencastle its second conference loss of the season by edging the Tiger Cubs 3-2. A wild pitch by Tim Lear in the first inning scored one run for the Golden Arrows and a missed fly ball by outfielder Kim Jones in the second inning brought in two more to give Sullivan’s ball club the winning margin. Jones’ missed catch in the second inning came when he tripped on a hole in centerfield while going after a routine fly ball. Lear was the losing pitcher for the Tiger Cubs while R. James was the winner for Sullivan. Lear is now 4-2 for the season. The Tiger Cubs’ only runs of the afternoon came during the first and fourth innings. In the top of the first inning,
a walk by Stacey Spencer and a single by Mike Duncan put Cub runners on first and third. Sullivan’s pitcher then threw a wild pitch and then stole second base. Teammate Randy Jones then singled to left field to send K. Jones across the plate for the Cubs’ second score of the game. Greencastle’s conference record is now 3-2 while overall the Tiger Cubs are 6-4. The Cubs’ next games will be this weekend against Portage High School on Friday and against Hobart on Saturday. Since the overnight trip is financed by the players, a fund-raising project will be held this week to acquire the needed money.
