Computers Say Smith All The Way
DALLAS (AP) — The computers say it’s Stan Smith all the way to the finals in the 5100,000 World Championship of Tennis beginning tonight, but sly old Ken Rosewall, the only man ever to win the 550,000 pri/e, is again lurking in the backround. The 26-year-old Smith, who has won $104,000 in his first year on the WCT tour, gets the third annual singles championship underway at Moody Coliseum on the Southern Methodist campus against Australian John Alexander. The second match pits Rod Laver, twice beaten by Rosewall in the WCT finals, against
fellow Aussie Roy Emerson. Roswall, a 38-year-old, 140pound marvel with a flawless ground game, is favored to reach the finals in Group B against the vigorous Smith of Group A. A computer which was fed the win-loss results of 341 WCT matches spelled out Smith and Rosewall as the finalists. Rosewall opens defense of his crown Thursday night against Roger Taylor of England. The second match pits Arthur Ashe against Marty Riessen. The semifinals are scheduled Friday night with the nationally televised finals at noon Sunday.

fade. 1 just lost it.” The Hermosa Beach, Calif., driver Tuesday became the first to hit the wall in practice this year for the May 28 Indy 500. Simpson’s last lap. had been over 183 miles per hour. Then, coming out of the No. 2 turn, his Vollstedt racer smacked the inner retaining wall and slid 468 feet. He didn’t see much of the ride. *1 was busy ducking down inside the cockpit after she went," he said. Gordon Johncock, driving an Eagle, was right behind Simpson when he lost it. “If my engine hadn’t of coughed a couple times in the turns,” Johncock told Simpson,” Td have been right where you started coming back across the track.” The crash completely tore off the right rear wheel, its upright suspension component and susoension member. The transmission case was broken and the right side tubular bracing which mounts the tub to the rest of the car is twisted. Thirty-eight other drivers were on the track Tuesday, with former Indy winner Mario Andretti taking the fastest lap at 191.4 m.p.h. in his Parnelli racer. So far, 10 drivers have surpassed 191.1 m.p.h., with the top speed of the month a 197.802 by Swede Savage.

Maple Leafs Coach Stunned Over “Shootout
By JOEMOOSHIL Associated Press Sports Writer MONTREAL (AP)— “1 can’t explain it, really. It was a wide-open game on both sides,” said Montreal Coach Scotty Bowman in the understatement of Tuesday night’s record-shat-tering Stanley Cup shootout. Chicago Black Hawks prevailed 8-7 over Montreal to cut the Canadiens’ lead to 3-2 in the best-of-seven series which now moves to Chicago for the sixth game. It will be nationally tele-
vised Thursday night (8 p.m. EDT-NBC). If a seventh game is needed, it will be played in Montreal Sunday afternoon.
DUROCHER MAKES A MOVE HOUSTON (AP) - Leo Durocher, manager of the Houston Astros, fired pitching coach Jim Owens on the eve of Houston’s baseball opener with the Atlanta Braves.
The Canadiens started the scoring parade at 2:47 of the first period on a goal by Frank Mahovlich and there was no letup until the final gun sounded with the Canadiens furiously putting on a six-man attack in an effort to tie the contest. “Unbelievable,” was the word used in both dressing rooms after the game. “1 was sitting on the bench praying,” said Stan Mikita, the Black Hawk star who scored two goals and added two assists
to the Chicago total. The two teams battled to a 22 tie in the first period and then pumped in eight goals in the second period with the Hawks scoring five to take a 7-5 lead which they never relinquished. The eight goals in one period and 15 in the game set Stanley Cup records. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Mahovlich. Bowman kept shaking his head as if he couldn’t believe what he had seen.
“Do you realize that if we don’t count those two open net goals they got in the third game, we had them shut out for 98 minutes,” said Bowman. The real victims were the goalies- Ken Dryden of the Canadiens and Tony Esposito of “Demoralizing?” asked Dryden. “Yes. Good, bad or otherwise, when you let in goals, you feel them. Once a game starts out wide open, it’s hard to change. Even when you take a
lead, you might think you want to change the game, but it seems you just can’t. It’s something that keeps escalating.” Esposito was so stunned by it all he could hardly speak above a whisper. “Wide-open,” said Esposito. “What else can you say? 1 think out of the 15 goals, three or four shouldn’t have gone in. But we scored eight and they scored seven. I’m satisfied. Tonight the team carried me. I let in seven goals and they got me the victory.”
