The Hutcheson Home -- Basic

Style, Interesting Variations

The cream-colored stucco house at 202 Greenwood Drive has a Spanish look. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hutcheson in Green Meadow Addition was remodeled by the Hutchesons after they purchased it, but they have preserved and enhanced the original Spanish appearance. The large front patio is surrounded by a handsome iron fence, while inside the house wrought

iron chandeliers and some pieces of furniture emphasize the Spanish style. This is one of several houses open to visitors on the C.W.F. House and Garden Tour, June 6. Unity in the interior decor is furthered by the use of the same pale green shag carpet throughout the house. All walls are in Shasta white except those where variety is achieved through the use of wall paper.

The entrance hall with slate floor and gold-foil-papered walls leads to a spacious living room, comfortably furnished with modern pieces. The focus of interest is the fireplace, built of old bricks against a roughpaneled wall. The mantel, hand hewn by Mr. Hutcheson from a walnut log retrieved from an old covered bridge, completes the fireplace which is in frequent use. A couch, easy chairs, and a chaise lounge invite relaxation. A stereo, T.V. and baby grand piano suggest the owners’ interest in music and entertainment. The chair used by Mrs. Hutcheson in her childhood provides a touch of nostalgia. At the end of the living room there is a dining table, but an octagonal table in the cozy kitchen is used for meals on a day-to-day basis. Mrs. Hutcheson’s desk is also in this multi-purpose room. The appliances and the double sink are in Harvest Gold. The cabinets are in dark wood. Wall paper and matching curtains give pleasing variety to the overall decor of the house. Double sliding doors leading to the front patio permit easy outdoor cooking and dining in suitable weather. The house has no basement but closets and the utility room accommodate the necessary equipment. A bath opening from the utility

room near the entrance from the attached garage is conveniently placed for use by anyone coming in from outdoor work. The wing opposite the kitchen and utility room houses the master bedroom, a guest room, and a bath. The furniture in the master bedroom is Spanish in style. The bedspread on the kingsize bed and the draw curtains feature a black and

brown print in large design. The guest room has blueflowered bedspread and curtains. The red and gold tapestry cloth-like wall covering in the bath gives this room an exotic look. This is a house with a basic style but with interesting variations from room to room. It will offer ideas to visitors as to what can be achieved in the rejuvenation of an older house.

Comfort, relaxation, and a touch of nostalgia add to decor of Hutcheson home

tricks, and it becomes evident that you could have stopped the contract by rising with the ace of clubs at trick two and then switching to the king and another diamond. If you are not inclined to be self-critical, you might dismiss the hand pronto and go on to the next deal. You could say that this type of defense is easy enough when you see all four hands, but not so easy when you see only two. However, if you study the matter objectively, you find that going up with the ace and shifting to the K-5 of diamonds is not as crazy as it seems. As a matter of fact, it is the only method of defense that holds water at all. It is clear from the bidding and South’s play at trick two that he can cash five heart tricks at will. He can’t be

Opening lead - jack of spades. Let’s say you’re West, defending against three notrump, and lead the jack of spades, won by South with the ace. Declarer plays the three of clubs, on which you follow low, and dummy wins with the queen. South then cashes all his hearts and clubs, scoring nine

missing the ace or queen or he would be tackling hearts instead of clubs. He is furthermore known to have three spade winners. South therefore has eight ready tricks and is busy looking for a ninth. Your only chance to stop him is to grab the ace of clubs and shift to a diamond, hoping to hit partner with four

or five diamonds headed by the A-Q-10. The odds are surely against finding East with this precise holding, but that is the only real chance you have to stop the contract. Sally Jo And Friends To Visit Here
