WASHINGTON (AP) White House Counsel John W. Dean III who has declared he will not be made a scapegoat for the Watergate affair, appears ready to implicate other presidential aides, says a source close to him. In another development. The Washington Post quotes sources today as saying President Nixon was told by members of his own staff last year that former Atty. Gen. John N. Mitchell and Dean probably were involved in both the wiretapping of Democratic party headquarters and a subsequent coverup Nixon, said the Post's sources, responded, “Give me some evidence." Mitchell, former campaign director for Nixon, testified last week before a grand jury investigating Watergate. He told newsmen afterwards that he had heard discussion of wiretapping plans in the 1972 campaign but disapproved them. Dean reportedly has been named by former Nixon campaign aide Jeb Stuart Magruder as among those present at a meeting where hugging of the Democratic headquarters was planned. Dean, presidential counsel, conducted the initial investigation into the case, which was followed by Nixon's statement that no White House aides were involved Nixon said April 7, however, that he had learned of major new developments pointing to the truth in the case. “In a perhaps misguided concept in protecting the people around the President, he (Dean) has been caught up in questionable activities," a source close to Dean said Sunday. The source said Dean's April 19 comment that he would not be made a scapegoat was “a clear indication that he is now going to help the President clear the White House staff of those that have besmirched the office of the presidency to the end that President Nixon will have better and purer advisers in the future.” There were several other developments over the weekend. — Charles W. Colson, a former White House consultant, reiterated Sunday that he had no involvement in Watergate. He characterized as “just plain wrong" a story in the Los Angeles Times saying that Colson was prepared to document an administration coverup of Watergate. The Times stood by its story'. Ridder Publications’ Washington bureau quoted sources as saying Atty. Gen. Richard Kleindicnst may resign after Watergate investigations are over because he has fallen out of favor with Nixon over his handling of the matter. He already has withdrawn from the case. « —Sen. Edward Brooke, RMass., said Sunday it is difficult to understand how persons working with the President would not have told Nixon about the Watergate hugging before it was done. “It is incon-

Women Not Quite Ready For Marriage, What’s The Hurry?

By ANN BIAC KM AN Associated Press Writer At 29, Texas legislator Kay Bailey is single, not uptight about it and, in fact, says, ‘Tm not anxious to get married. Andria Knapp, an economist hasjust quit her government job to spend four months working in England. “I don’t want to get married now’ she says. Kay and Andria are among an increasing number of women who want to get married someday, but ask, “What’s the hurry” Census figures show that in the past decade the number of single women between the ages of 20 and 24 rose to 36.4 per cent, an eight per cent increase. In the 25-to 29 year age group, the number of single women increased by two percentage points to 12.2 per cent. These figures were adjusted to discount the effects of population growth. “The same has been true for men” a Census Bureau official said i “More young people are pursuing advanced careers and advanced educational opportunities. Also, there are fewer constraints these days. There’s more latitude and flexibility In interviews with two dozen female college graduates, all career-oriented and between the ages of 22 and 35, most said their ideas about when to get married have changed markedly since they graduated from college. Influencing them they said, were better job opportunities and salaries, more relaxed sexual morality and reliable birth control methods, legalization of abortion in many states, a steadily rising divorce rate and a new sense of selfworth. Dr. Zella Luria, professor of psychology at Tufts University cited another factor influencing the delay to marry . The notion that if you get married, your problems are solved, has gone by the way side. W omen have more options now,” she said. “I won’t close the door on anything," said Miss Bailey, an attractive blonde member of the Texas state legislature and S15.000-a-year corporate lawyer in House. “But I’m not just biding my time. “With all the pressures in my job, I sometimes look for a way not to have to face the cold, cruel world every day. I think it might be nice to go to luncheons, chauffeur the kids, take care of the house. “But when 1 get right down to the core of it. 1 don’t know if 1 could be the complete housewife. I’m not sure.” Most of the women interviewed said that ultimately they did not want to shun marriage, but rather sought to fit it

into their lives. “It’s not a matter of not wanting to get marned, but ol figuring out where it will fit,” said a 28-year-old stockbroker trainee who requested anonymity. “When I got out of college in ’69, all my friends were getting married,” she said. “I had tremendous guilt feelings. 1 wondered, what’s the matter with me? “Then I went to California and met happy people who had careers and friends and a good sense of family, people who were content with themselves. I am no longer disappointing to my parents, disappointing to myself.” Most of the women had quick, articulate answers to questions about marriage, indicating they had given it considerable thought, but almost all stumbled over one: What to do with their careers if they have children? “In this job, they’d be impossible," said Bernice Buresh, 31, recently named Newsweek magazine's first woman bureau chief and transferred to Boston. SEED INDUSTRY APPOINTS NEW SPOKESMAN

Derek Fell, newly appointed Executive Director of the National Garden Bureau and AllAmerica Selections, aims to make gardening even more popular. The American seed industry has appointed Derek Fell as the new Executive Director of All-America Selections and the National Garden Bureau. All-America Selections are seed trials held each year to make awards for outstanding new flower and vegetable breeding achievements. The trials .are conducted at 29 demonstration gardens in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Fell’s duties will be to administer these trials and organise publicity and sales promotion of the award winners. The National Garden Bureau is an educational service sponsored by the seed industry to promote gardening from seed.
