Harlan’s fascinating query should intrigue all of us. Despite modern medical discoveries, why don’t we live as long as Biblical Moses? Dr. Ivy says our bodies are capable of 120 years! Why did Abraham outlive David by 105 years?

CASE W-567: Harlan B., aged 22, is a seminary student. “Dr. Crane,” he began, “Jesus was crucified when he was only 33 years old. “But if he had not been killed in that tragic manner and had lived to a ripe old age, would he have equalled the 120 years Moses was on Earth? “Or even Methuselah’s 969 years? “Since Christ had a human body, what would have been its likely lifespan?” LIFESPAN OF 120? World famous physiologist, Dr. Andrew C. Ivy, says the normal human body is capable of living 120 years. American men now average 66 years while women reach 74. USC biology professor, Dr. B. L. Strehler, says by the year 2,000, our average lifespan will be 20 to 30 years longer than

now.

Yet our elderly folks have added only about 6 weeks to their longevity since Abraham Lincoln’s time. For the lifespan of a 60-year-old person then was only about 6 weeks less than that of a 60-year-old at present! Our zooming increase in longevity for the average

American is due in large part to saving the lives of babies; not to lengthening the age of Senk: Citizens. Despite the fact Lincoln’s' generation didn’t use orange juice or tomato juice, vitamin pills or penicillin, etc., its older citizens lived almost exactly as long as old folks today! Obviously, there were more trace chemicals in the soil 100 years ago than is true today. Possibly they offset the modern use of fruit juices, vitamins, antibiotics and vaccination against disease. Could this reduction in watersoluble trace chemicals help explain the diminishing lifespans of these Bible characters:

Noah Terah Abraham Moses David

950 years 205 years 175 years 120 years 70 years

Dear Heloise: It was a sweater dress in glorious technicolor, knit of heavy cotton yarn, and only nine dollars on sale. But the tag said “machine wash, dry flat” and I don’t have enough waterproof flat surfaces to spare.

That was a 500-year span between Abraham and Moses, for the Hebrews spent 430 years

in Egypt.

Why did Moses live 55 years ■Hints from HeloiseA friend gave the answer: dry the dress on the hood or trunk of the car, protected by a beach towel. Spread the dress out after the last errand of the day and let it dry overnight. If that’s impractical with carports and cold weather, how about the kitchen floor for

Partnership misunderstandings are certainly not a rarity, even in the highest echelons of bridge. Consider this deal from the 1969 Trials where George Rapee and Sidney Lazard settled in four hearts with a 4-1 trump fit, when all the time they could have made six clubs with perfectly normal play. Rapee’s diamond cuebid suggested that partner bid a new suit, but Lazard couldn’t very well oblige. Instead he tried to show reasonably good spades and moderate high-card strength by jumping to three

spades.

When Rapee bid four clubs, Lazard tried to indicate a heart feature in the form of a singleton by responding four hearts. Lazard thought his partner would not read this as a heart suit, since he had denied heart length earlier. But Rapee thought otherwise — he assumed that South had three or four hearts — and passed. Oddly enough, four hearts proved unbeatable! Lazard wound up losing a diamond and two trumps, and so made the contract. Even if West had led a trump originally, declarer would still have succeeded. After cashing the A-K-Q of trumps and A-K of spades, felling the queen, South would play the jack of clubs. Whether West covered or not, declarer would lead the jack of spades at the earliest opportunity and discard a diamond. Regardless of how the opponents elected to defend thereafter South would make ten tricks for sure, and if the defense slipped only slightly he would finish with eleven. But despite the amazing outcome of the hand, we continue to recommend to our readers that they avoid 4-1 trump fits!

less than Abraham? And David fall short by another bo yc">rs? For they had all survived childhood diseases and reached healthy adulthood, so their shorter lifespans apparently were not due to germs. It was approximately 1,000 years between Abraham and King David. A lot of the trace chemicals of the soil could meanwhile have been dissolved and carried to the sea. Thus, their fruits and vegetables, as well as meat from animals grazing on such chemically-deficient soils, might be the answer! For the modern tobacco habit and urban ills can’t apply to those Bible heroes, since they were primarily rural folks, with similar menu items Many modern biochemists are urging the use of trace chemicals to insure your endocrine glands the raw materials out of which they manufacture their vital secretions that keep us healthy. * $ S:

Dear Heloise: When trying to match colors in the store with a garment at home, I thought I had it, but when I put the two together, they didn't match at all. I thought there had to be a way to do this if bringing the item with you was impossible. I went to a paint store and got several color lists. I looked them over and was amazed at the many shades of each color and I started checking different things at home, carpet, furniture, dresses, shoes, pocketbooks, etc., to find out how the colors stacked up with the paint color

codes.

After getting a few more charts, I had about as many different shades of each color as exist. I keep these color charts handy and when I want to match a color now, I look for the exact shade, if possible; if not, I check the shades lighter and

darker.

This has saved me many a trip to the store to exchange a purchase for a better match. Britta M. Yeabower
