Steve Prefontaine Sets American 6-Mile Record

LOS ANGELES (AP)

Steve Prefontaine works hard to structure his entire track season and then, in one afternoon, blows the schedule to

bits.

Year after year it’s the same story, he says. “I work hard early in the season, run a couple of indoor races and then wait until late in March before I run outdoors. “So we went to Bakersfield (Calif.) for our annual spring break meet," said the University of Oregon senior, “and I did it again. Don’t ask me how." What he did was set an American record in the six-mile run of 27 minutes 9.4 seconds. “Really, 1 had no intention of running for a -record,” said the 5-foot-9, 150-pounder. “Coach (Bill) Dellinger told me to cruise around in 28 minutes kind of-use it for a workout. I was supposed ter follow a pace

SPORTS Downing Receives Ill’s MVP Award

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. AP - Steve Downing, the 6-foot-8 center who paced lightly regarded Indiana to the Big Ten basket-ball championship and third place in the NCAA, has been-named IU’s most valuable player of the season. Coach Bobby Kmght announced the Indianapolis senior’s selection Wednesday night at a televised banquet honoring the Hoosier squad that tallied a 22-6 season. Downing led the- Hoosiers in scoring with 563 points and in rebounding with 296. He was Indiana scorer in 17 games and leading rebounder in 23 of their 28 games. Knight also announced the team voted senior John Ritter of Goshen honorary captain for the year. Ritter was a threeyear starter and second-rank-ing scorer on the squad. Downing’s selection puts him in the running for the Big Ten most valuable player award and the silver basket-

ball trophy awarded annually by the Chicago Tribune. “1 couldn’t agree more with the choice of the squad,” Knight said. “This was a squad which accomplished the things that it did through team attitude, hut everyone could see the contributions Steve made to our season. He’s a tremendously talented basketball player, an equally fine young man of leadership and one of the most unselfish players I’ve ever coached.” ~ Downing’s 41 points against Illinois was the Big Ten’s individual high for the year. He was an All-Big Ten first team selection and was chosen to the all-tournament teams at both the NCAA Mideast Regional and NCAA finals. In their NCAA finals game against UCLA. Downing outscored the Bruins’highly-touted Bill Walton, 26-14. although the Hoosier played eight minutes less.

of 70-second laps for the first mile, 69 seconds for the second mile and 68 seconds for die third mile. That would have put me at 13:48 for three- miles.” “Well, 1 was- on pace -hut I felt so good 1 picked it up. Bill told me if it got too hot to ease off and with two miles left I started getting blisters on both feet. But I felt fine.” His 27:09.4 was 2.2 seconds better than the previous American mark set by Billy Mills and Gerry Lindgren in 1965. “Pre" had run 27:22.4 for an NCAA record in last year’s Bakersfield meet. He said that last Saturday’s six-mile was only the third he’d ever run and, “I still feel something in the 26:50s or 26:40s is within my range if I chose to concentrate on it, but that race puts you in bed for a week after you run it so I think I’ll concentrate on the mile and two mile this year.”
