EASE IN RELIEF COST.

Although there already

been an increase of 40 per cent in the number of applicants for work, the Citizens' Committee on Unemployment Relief hopes to assist in keeping this year's cost of unemployment relief -within the same amount spent last year, the chairman of the committee said today. Iuring- the five weeks in which this year's program has been under way, the committee has had lr 076 applications for work and has registered 915, which includes 110 from townships other-than Perry and Bloomington. Of these, 503 have been assigned to work. Last year the total number applying for work was 656, and 445 were employed. : Co-ordination of the work of the Various relief organizations, including1 the township trustees, county commissioners, city street department and county road superintendent, under the leadership of the Citizens Committee is the principle by which, this efficiency can be obtained, it was said. Xst year 85 per cent of the families applying for aid from the township trustees had able-bodied men in them. Under the committee's program these- men will - be

and tho community will get from $35,000 to $40,000 worth of worthwhile public improvements from the money which othexwise would be expended without value being received by the community. By virtue of i th:ts co-operation, the committee is enabled -to reduce the amount-to be raised, by public subscription -to' -support this work by more than halt despite the 50 per cent increase of work which it probably will .sponsor this year. Only $9,500 will be asked for through public subscription in comparison to the $20,000 goal of last year. The' Thanksgiving drive to raise this amount . will begin November 21 under the supervision of W. Brown of -the Graham Motor Sales company.
