Muncie celebrates the MLK holiday
By Jeannine Lee Lake The Muncie Times The city's annual celebration honoring Martin Luther King Jr. will again be held at the Ball State University Alumni Center, at the intersection of Tillotson and Bethel avenues. Moved from the Student Center due to renovations last year, the holiday recognizing King will kick-off with the annual MLK breakfast at 7 a.m. at the northside Alumni Center, which sits directly next to the football stadium.
The guest speaker for the annual breakfast will be former state congressman and local activist Hurley Goodall. Other dignitaries including Ball State President Jo Ann Gora and Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley. The day will also include a series of youth and adult workshops from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, also at the Alumni Center. The day continues with a service project at Second Harvest Food Bank, where volunteers will donate food, and help with a variety of duties at the
local non-profit agency. At 4:30 p.m., students and area participants will line up at the Multicultural Center at University and McKinley avenues, an annual MLK tradition that recalls the spirit of those who marched in the 1960s civil rights events. The evening event will be held at 6 p.m. at Union Missionary Baptist Church, 1103 N. Macedonia St. in the Whiteley neighborhood. Speaker for that event is Rev. Anthony Pettus of Fort Wayne, the dynamic
pastor of Greater Progressive Baptist Church. Eron Davis, a planning committee member, said organizers are excited about the MLK activities, which highlight the care and concern Muncie has for its underprivileged. "We had to stay at the Alumni Center again this year because of the renovations and also changed some of the times up," Davis said. "I think the evening service at 6 p.m. will allow more people to attend." Although the evening service had been held at Christ Temple for over a
decade, this year the location was moved to Union. Pettus - who has preached at several local churches in the last few years - will be joined by a variety of local leaders, including U.S. Congressman Mike Pence, who has continually supported minority progress, locally and in Washington, D.C.
