continued from page 1 School, graduating with honors in 1947. She then enrolled at Ball State University, but dropped out to marry her high school sweetheart, Hurley C. Goodall, on May 1, 1948. Goodall had just returned from military service in Japan. They were married by the Rev. Ford Gibson, pastor of Shaffer Chapel AME Church, in the church parsonage. A son, Hurley Jr., was born Jan. 23, 1949. Another son, Fredrick, was born to the union Aug. 13, 1952 the new Mrs. Goodall entered the first licensed practical nurse class at Ball Memorial Hospital in
1953. Upon graduation, she was hired at the hospital where she worked for the next 31 years, mostly in pediatrics, before retiring in 1984. A strong supporter of her husband’s community activities, she traveled all over the country with him as he served on the Muncie Board of Education, 1970 to 1978, including serving as board president in 1974 and 1975. In 1978, Goodally was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives. His wife was deeply involved in that also. She became president of the Indiana General Assembly Wives' Club in 1985 and 1986. And as president she was asked
by House Speaker J. Roberts Daily, of Muncie, to help host the National Conference of Legislators held in Indianapolis in 1986. Over 7,000 delegates, from all over the country, attended. Comments from those who attended called it the best ever held. Mrs. Goodall was also determined that both of our sons would go to college and receive a good education. Hurley Jr. graduated from Depauw University in Greencastle and earned his master's from Ball State University. His -younger brother, Fred, also graduated from Ball State, with a degree in journalism, and is a sportswriter for the Associated Press in
Tampa, Fla. "We were also fortunate to get to travel to two Democrat National Conventions, the first nominated Jimmy Carter for president, in New York City. The second, (also) in New York City, nominated William Jefferson Clinton for president. "We were pleased to be invited to the White House by President and Mrs. Clinton on Dec. 17,1993. We were surprised at how many people we knew who were there. Other legislators from around the country and many who were former sate legislators we had met through the National Conference of Black State Legislators (and) who now serve in
Congress, (people) that we met at various meetings throughout the country (were also there)," Goodall said.. "I could not have asked for a more supportive wife and mother of out two children. "I cannot remember one instance, in our married life of 61 years, that I asked for her support that she did not give it iy"God blessed me many times over when He sent her my way and I will be eternally grateful for that blessing."
