Dr. Makris Answers Your Questions Why is everything printed in such small type now? I have to hold menus, the newspaper, etc. at arm’s length to read them. Most people begin to notice this loss of close-up focusing ability in their early 40’s. The official term for this vision loss is presbyopia. Presbyopia is the process in which the crystalline lens of the human lens gradually becomes more rigid and less flexible over time. The muscles that control the focusing of the lens are then less able to manipulate it effectively. The vision distortions that are caused by presbyopia can be corrected easily and effectively in most patients. Other than holding reading material further away, some signs of this progressively worsening condition include eyestrain from doing close-up work and needing more light to read. Annual checkups with our office will help you stay on top of your presbyopia and provide you with the correct lens prescriptions as your vision changes over time.
