continued from page 1 nace and in 1885 invented a system called telegraphony, which allowed telegraph lines to carry voice signals. Marwin Strong portrayed “Garrett A. Morgan” who invented the first electrical traffic sign in 1923. John Young-El portrayal was of “Benjamin Banneker” who created the first clock crafted in American in 1753. Gary Chenault portrayed “Lewis H. Latimer” an African-American inventor, noted for his contribution to the technology of electrical lighting. The second half of the program gave recognition to the local Innovators and Achievers, who received the Mayor James P Carey Community Activist Award. Facilitated by Dr. Creasy and Marilyn Carey who presented the awards to: Marie Evans; Doris Faulkner; Dr. Dolores Fowlkes; Albert Johnson; Pastor Thomas Perchlik and Rev. J.C. Williams. Recognition was also given to Daniel L. Ivy who is Muncie Fire Department’s first African American Battalion Chief; he is also Indiana Army National Guard Provost Marshall of the 938th Military Police Detachment (Law and Order).
