Dan Ivy makes history with new promotion

By Deborah Barnett Several decades after the first AfricanAmerican was hired by the Muncie Fire Department, the city has named a black fireman to Battalion Chief - the third-highest position in the department. Nineteen-year veteran Dan Ivy is the first African-American to attain the position of Battalion Chief, which is the highest rank after fire chief and deputy fire chief. A capable fireman by any standard - black or

white - Ivy has worked hard to achieve the rank of battalion chief - a title he has wanted since his first day on the job on Oct. 15, 1988. “I’ve always seen myself aiming high and looking for leadership positions,” Ivy said while in Firehouse No. 1 on Madison and Jackson streets. “I’ve been trained to be a leader.” Ivy started his position about two weeks ago and he already has a vision for the department: to see it grow and develop professionally. He also looks forward to taking the fire chief’s vision and enforc-

ing it in the department. “I enjoy being responsible for making things happen within the department,” he said. As an inspector, Ivy said he wasn’t involved in the day to day operations of the department and was uninformed. Since taking the position, he said he enjoys being involved in running and maintaining the department. In his new job, Ivy maintains the computers for all the stations and trucks, does some investigations and oversees the training department. Though, he enjoyed his continued on page 9
