Dr. Makris Answers Your Questions My eyes seem to be very dry much of the time. Why is this? Dry Eye Syndrome is an uncomfortable, chronic condition that affects millions. Dry eye is frequently caused by an inflammation in the tear ducts on the surface of the eye, which leads to decreased tear production. Tears are comprised of fatty oils, water, salt and mucus. They keep the eyes moist and wash away dust, bacteria and particles that could harm the cornea. They also provide a cushion between the eyelid and cornea. It is via tears that the delicate surface of the eye receives oxygen and nutrients. People who work at computer monitors often suffer from dry eye. Remedies for dry eye include over-the-counter or prescription artificial tear drops, nighttime gels and removable silicone plugs for severe cases. For information on various eye conditions, as well as information on the latest advancements in surgical techniques, tune in Dr. Makris' weekly television show, "You and Your Eyes", on Muncie Public Access Channel 42, Sundays at 6:00 PM and Wednesdays at 4:00 PM.
