Dr. Makris Answers Your Questions

I have been seeing advertisements for “eye vitamins.” Are these types of pills truly beneficial to eyesight? It appears that taking “eye vitamins” can be helpful in maintaining eyesight, but only under certain conditions and when taken properly. In a study conducted by the National Eye Institute, it was found that advanced age-related macular degeneration progression could be slowed by 25% when individuals took large doses of Vitamins C and E, as well as zinc. After these results were published, numerous “eye vitamins” hit the market, with many making broad claims of eyesight protection. In actuality, the study did not show that taking vitamins could cure or prevent macular degeneration. So far, studies have only shown vitamins to be helpful in the middle or late stages of macular degeneration. For individuals in the latter stages of this disease, ask your ophthalmologist to recommend a vitamin with the formula and dosage used in the study. It is important that you only take these vitamins under a doctor’s supervision because high doses of Vitamins A and E can accumulate in the body and become toxic. In high doses. Vitamin A has also been linked to birth defects and an increased risk of lung cancer, in smokers.
