continued from page 1 GIN - Samuel L. Jackson and Alfre Woodard were among the crowd of thousands that turned out last week to celebrate the 75th birthday of Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Johannseburg, South Africa. When asked what he would like to achieve in his remaining years, Tutu said he would like to see peace in Darfur, Zimbabwe and other troubled places in the world. Earlier this year, Tutu was named a member of a UN advisory panel on genocide prevention, drawing on his long experience as a campaigner against apartheid. He was named Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986 and awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1984. He retired in 1996, hoping for a “slightly less hectic life”, but then agreed to a request by former president Nelson Mandela to head the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.Nobel peace prize winner In recent years, he has spoken out forcefully for those who have not yet seen the benefits of the African Renaissance. In a speech last week Archbishop Tutu blamed the apartheid system of racial segregation, which ended 12 years ago, for damaging South Africans' moral sense. The country is "sitting on a powder keg", he said, because the gap between rich and poor is widening and some of the very rich are now black. "We need to be very

careful that the poor don’t begin to say 'where is the freedom dividend?’" he said.

Congratulating the Archbishop, Dr Samuel Kobia, General Secretary of the World Council of

Churches said, “You have challenged and pushed us never to adjust to the powers that are, but

always to discern the signs of God’s coming kingdom and to act accordingly.”
