Recent studies that followed patients with macular degeneration over long periods of time have established that there is indeed less risk for progression of macular degeneration in patients who have taken a multi-vitamin supplement. The difference, however, is not as staggering as one might anticipate from the press that this fact has been receiving. Patients who use multi-vitamins are found to have 13% lower risk for significant progression of macular degeneration than their counterparts who did not use vitamins. It therefore has been proven useful to take the vitamins, but it is not an actual treatment for this disease; and the benefit is significant, yet not staggering. With the extent of the macular degeneration epidemic, a lot of research is being carried out to find cures for this disorder.
