In Memory of John Paul Huffman
John Paul Huffman, 93, of Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, IN died Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 2:00am at Peabody Healthcare Center. He was bom on October 6, 1911 in Onward, Indiana to Martin Henry and Carrie (Stutesman) Huffman. He married Joy Dorothy Reiff in North Manchester, IN on July 21, 1935; she died November 25, 1998. Mr. Huffman served as principal at Muncie Central from 1958-1973. He then served as administrative assistant to the superintendent and supervisor of special education until his retirement in 1977. He played a key role in the design and curriculum development of the new Central High School, which opened in 1973. He was very involved in the development of the Open Concept program at Muncie Central and other Indiana schools. Mr. Huffman came to Muncie following a term as principal of Anderson High School from 1953-1958, He previously served as principal at Shields (Seymour) High School; principal and teacher at Knox Community Schools; principal and teacher at Washington Center School; and teacher and basketball coach at Columbia City, Lagro, and Chester Township Schools. A native of Onward, Indiana, Mr. Huffman was a 1929 graduate of Central High School. He earned his oachelor's degree in Chemistry and Math from Manchester College in 1933. He completed post-graduate studies at Manchester College and
received his Master's Degree from Indiana University in 1942. Additional graduate work was completed at Michigan, Purdue, Ball State, and Colorado.
Mr. Huffman was a WWII veteran where he served as a Surgical Technician. He has been a member of the Congregational Christian Church of North Manchester since 1936. His memberships included Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Torch Club, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Indiana State Teachers Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, American Association of School Administrators, and Phi Kappa Delta..
He is survived by 2 Sons, John (Lois Jean) Huffman of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, James (Joyce) Huffman of Topsfield, MA; six grandsons, and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and 2 sisters
Funeral services will be held at Peabody Memorial Chapel, Saturday, June 4, at 10:00am. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Servia, IN. Friends may call from 5-7pm, Friday, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester.
