Trumpet Awards coming to TV 1 on June 5
ATLANTA,Ga.--Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Dennis Archer and Nancy Wilson were among the honorees for the 2005 Trumpet Awards, which will air on TV One on June 5. The Trumpet Awards, which were hosted this year by Tom Joyner and his wife, Donna Richardson, with special music performances by CeCe Winans, Smokie Norful and Donnie McClurkin, honored African American and minority achievers in fields as diverse as law, politics and entertainment. Special to this year’s awards was. Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, president emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind., who was honored with a newly created Humanitarian Award, pre-
sented by former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young. Other honorees at the 2005 Trumpet Awards included: Dick Gregory; Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin; Joe Louis Dudley, Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr.; Bishop T.D. Jakes; Bishop Eddie Long; Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie; Michael Misick, chief minister of the Turks & Caicos Islands; and Donald Young Jr., who got the young Star Award. Presenters for the Trumpet Awards included Fonzworth Bentley, Judge Mablean Ephriam, Jasmine Guy, James Lesure, Judge Greg Mathis, LisaRaye McCoy, Eva Pigford, Clifton Powell and Marvin Woods. Additional performances at the awards Ddinner were by Kathleen Bertrand, Dr. Bobby
Jones, Najee, Ruby Wilson, Brenda Jackson, James Patterson, and Jackie Burns. The Trumpet Awards Foundation also announced that TV One, the lifestyle and entertainment network for African American adults, will be its new television partner, in a multi-year agreement under which TV One will televise the awards and the Red Carpet Show. Xernona Clayton, the creator and executive producer of the Trumpets, said, “Through the generosity and benevolence of Turner Broadcasting, we have been granted a marvelous opportunity and a great future. Turner Broadcasting offered us independence and a multimillion dollar support system to grow, develop and expand the mission of the Trumpet Awards,
