Vasilis Makris, M.D., P.C. Diseases and Surgery of the Eye 288-1935 3300 W. Purdue Avenue Dr. Makris Answers Your Questions Q: I have glaucoma, and I am being treated with drops. My pressure is under good control. What is the prognosis? A: There have been some recent studies that examine the long-term outcome in glaucoma patients that are being treated. This included groups that had glaucoma surgery, as well as groups that were treated with eye drops. In both groups the visual fields (i.e. peripheral vision) were followed over a period of five years. The study found that both the visual acuity and the pressure control were comparable in the two groups. There was, however, some continued visual field loss, despite the fact that the pressure was under control. In addition, the need for cataract surgery was three times greater in the group that had surgery, rather than the group that had eye drops. Therefore, my preferred mode of treatment is eye drops to control the pressure and frequent follow-up of the visual field loss. For information on various eye conditions, as well as information on the latest advancements in surgical techniques, tune in Dr. Makris' weekly television show, “You and Your Eyes”, on Muncie Public Access Channel 42, Sundays at 6:00 PM and Wednesdays at 4:00 PM.
