Rebecca Thompson named Southside High School principal

Rebecca Thompson, associate principal of Muncie Central High School will return to Southside High School in August as principal of the 42 year old school, after previously serving as assistant principal there. Thompson was appointed to the administrative position at Muncie Community Schools’ Board of School Trustees’ Meeting. Thompson taught math at Southside High School from 1987 to 1994 and became assistant principal there in 1994. She was transferred to Central High School in 1999 when she was named associate principal. She previously taught for 11.5 years at Blackford County High School. Thompson received a bachelor degree in 1975 and masters in education in 1979 from Ball State University. The resignation of Karen Combs, assistant principal of Northside Middle School, was accepted. Combs will leave her position at the end of the 2003-2004 school year, following her accepting a position as principal at Glen Acres Elementary in Lafayette, Ind. Combs will
have served as assistant principal at Northside Middle School for 2 years. Other resignations included the retirement decisions of Rogene Feick, third grade teacher at Claypool Elementary, effective March 19, 2004 after 35 years with Muncie Community Schools, and Robert May, special education teacher at Central High School, who will retire May 31, 2004, following 34 years with the corporation. Mean while Dr. Marlin Creasy, superintendent, distributed information that explained the change of the last day of school for students and teachers due to one cancelled instructional day because of inclement weather. The last day for students for the 2003-2004 \ school year will be June f, and the last date for teachers will be June 2. The 2004-2005 school year corporation calendar was approved by the Board of School Trustees. The calendar includes a two day Fall Break October 18 and 19, 2004, and a Spring Break that aligns with that of Ball State University March 21 to 25, 2005 The first teacher in service day will be Aug. 23 the first student day is Aug. 26. Creasy asked all administrators to provide information regarding the last day of the 2003-2004 school year to faculty, staff and other interested individuals, and to provide the approved 2004-2005 school year calendar to students and parents through school newsletters and other appropriate announcements. Externally funded Summer Programs were approved as submitted by
Assistant Superintendent Steve Edwards. The program calls for a Middle School Career Exploration Camp, an I-READ Summer School, a Reading First Summer institute, a Preschool Enrichment Program, and a Preschool
Child Find Program to be conducted in collaboration with the Head Start Program. Two Summer Enrichment Classes, also presented by Edwards, were approved. They include a 5 day Science Camp at the
Adventure Environmental Learning Center for incoming fifth graders and a 5 day Math Camp at Northside Middle School for incoming sixth graders. The camps will take place June 7-11,2004.
