Gary D. has made it to this week's Youth Spotlight Gary D. Perkins, 11, is a fifth grader at Muncie's

Longfellow Elementary School, where he has 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. His favorite subjects are math and reading. He tutors third grade students in math and reading. During the lunch hour, he helps out in the cafeteria. His parents are Rochelle Perkins and Gary Ruffins. Gary has two older sisters. Precious, 13, and Kisha, 26, and two older brothers, Stephen Perkins, 16, and Curtis Ruffins, also 16. Gary is a point guard on Longfellow^ basketball. He said his role model is retired NBA legend Michael

Jordan. Gary enjoys swimming. He describes himself as "good swimmer." He also likes to play soccer and baseball. Black Beauty, by Anna Sewepp, is his favorite book. He also likes to listen to music on the radio, especially when the Beatles and rapper Big Popa. He also likes listening to some hip-hop music. "The two teachers I look up to are Mrs. Carol Myers, who is a regular class teacher and teaches all courses, and Mrs. Teresa Huggins, who counsels on behavior and how to do good in life," he said.

His favorite colors are green and red. His favorite foods are French fries, pizza, nachos and babarcued ribs. His favorite restaurant is Applebee's. He is very independent. Gary loves riding his bike to school, when the weather permits. Gary regularly goes to the Madison Avenue and 12th Street Boys and Girls Club. He is a member of Paramount Baptist Church, pastored by Charlotte Levi. He said he has always been told by his mother to put God first in everything he does. Even in school, he prays before taking a test. "Gary enjoys taking

showers and loves to be clean," said his father. Gary's advice to other is, "Don't do drugs and listen to your parents." Keep Up The Good Work From The Muncie Times
