continued from page 21. The Source magazine named Bynoe one of its “Top 10 Political Players” in the nation in its seventh annual “Power” Issue (January 2003). A cultural critic, political analyst, public speaker and essayist, Bynoe is best known as president and co-founder of the Urban Think Tank Institute, a nonpartisan, non-profit organization founded in 2000 to educate young people and to develop new political leadership. Davey D, a hip hop historian, journalist, deejay and community activist, was an outspoken panelist. He attended the University of California, Berkeley and began his radio career in the Bay Area. He is also a cofounder of the Bay Area Hip Hop Coalition (BAHHC) and a member of the Bay Area Black Journalists Association (BABJA). Talib Kweli, a hip hop artist and community activist also served on the panel. Jeffrey I. Johnson, a panelist who is one of the nation’s up and coming leaders, is the national director of the youth, college and young adult division of the NAACP. He is responsible for over 600 youth councils and college chapters, representing over 60,000 young people nationwide. Formerly the national assistant director for NAACP Programs, Johnson assisted in the supervision of the NAACP’s Military and Veterans Affairs, Health, Education, and Voter Empowerment divisions, as well as the Back to SchoolStay in School and NAACP ACT-SO programs. Omar Tyree is an author, publisher, lecturer and performance poet who
completed his undergraduate studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C., with honors in print journalism. After having firsthand experience with print shops and typesetting at newspaper plants, he organized MARS Productions, a soleproprietorship, to publish his first novel. Colored, On White Campus. Tyree was the youngest participant on a BET talk show pilot titled, “For Black Men Only,” which successfully aired in 1992. CBCF/Toyota Fellow, Richard D. Giles II recently received master’s degrees from the School of Diplomacy and International Relations and the School of Public & Corporate Communications at Seton Hall University. He also holds a bachelons degree in public administration from Virginia State University. His academic and professional focus is globalizatioms economic and political impact on American foreign policy. His professional experience includes working with communitybased organizations, studying abroad in Beijing, China, and serving as an international goodwill ambassador while serving as a commissioned officer of the U.S. Army.
