Q: I have heard that moving healthy retina nerve tissue into damaged areas of the retina can improve vision in patients that have severe visual loss. Is that possible? A: This process is call retinal trans-location and involves performing a large retinal detattachment and moving healthy retina into diseased areas. There is only limited experience regarding this technique but it does show some promise. The problem is that serious complications are significant and can exceed fifty per cent. Trans-location surgery works best with patients who have small lesions of recent onset and otherwise healthy retinas. Complications include a high degree of retinal detattachment as well as double vision after the surgery.
