Dee Harris continued from page 10 campus as a forum for public discourse on issues affecting black students. His association with the South Madison Community Center started in 1978 as a student volunteer. In 1992 he joined the center as assistant director, until the mayor decided to privatize the city’s community centers in 1996 in a bid to reduce the city budget. He was laid off. along with everyone else who was not a director. In 1997 he went back as executive director, after the center was taken over by the Area Churches Inc., group. "It was the first time in Muncie that I saw a group of black and white churches come together to work in the interest of the community. Muncie has changed since I first came here. There is
more dialogue today between the races on a lot of things that were never talked about before. I would, however, like to see more black people participating in community meetings." "At the center, we keep Dr. King's dream alive through programs that teach the youth the philosophy of physical. mental and spiritual growth. We emphasize the importance of education and lifelong learning. "We have 40 developmental assets, such as leadership, goal setting, respect for parents and resisting peer pressure, which we teach. We also teach the youth to avoid drugs and alcohol. I particularly urge them never to start using tobacco." Harris said.
