BSU names Burton to head campus police force

Gene Burton, who has served as Ball State University’s acting public safety director since February, has been named permanent director. “Over the past 8 months, we’ve seen Gene grow into an outstanding leader,” said Randy Hyman, dean of students and associate vice president for student services, who supervises the public safety department. “In February, I appointed Gene acting director because I felt the department needed someone with honesty, integrity and a sense of duty to lead it through a difficult transition. Those qualities have helped Gene gain the support of the department, and

he has been able to direct its personnel, programs and services in a manner consistent with the university’s vision, while earning the respect of the campus community.” Hyman said. Burton is a 22-year veteran of the department and

holds a

bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ball State. Before being appointed acting director on Feb. 6, Burton was a sergeant and shift supervisor who also oversaw the department’s training and special events planning. “I am flattered, a little bit humbled and very grateful for the opportunity,” said Burton. “I will continue to work to

In June, two external consultants hired by the university completed a 47-page report that listed 108 recommendations for improving the public safety department.
