The main risk factors for cataract formation are increasing age, diabetes, use of certain medications, as well as lifestyle. A recent study also found a link between cataract and heart disease. A ten-year study that followed over sixty thousand women found a link between cataract formation and heart diesease between the ages of forty-five and sixtythree. Women who had heart diesase and diabetes were three times as likely to have cataracts than those with just diabetes. It appears that circulatory factors, such as heart diesase, can affect the rate of cataract formation as well.
