LANG FROM PAGE 1 community happening. To accomplish this, events are being offered on three days in various locations throughout the city and are designed for all ages. For example, Motivate Our Minds (MOM), a volunteer group of parents and teachers dedicated to helping at-risk students, will present King-sized activities such as MLKBingo on Saturday. Another example of the range of events being offered: Adults who have to work on Monday can still participate in the celebration by attending a 7 a.m. prayer breakfast. The most important objective of the weekend, according to Lang, is to “heighten awareness” and “live out the dream” of improved race relations.
Sometimes, Lang says, the community just needs to hear encouraging words or listen to music together. High Street United Methodist Church will stage a “simply musical program” Sunday featuring the liturgical dance troop, High Praise, and the community choir, directed by Kevin Woodgett. The words from Micah 6:8, to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God, inspired this year’s theme. Each day of the weekend celebration, Jan. 19 to 21, is dedicated to one of these principles. Indianapolis Judge Z. Mae Jemison and attorney Dennis Stolle were aptly chosen to represent “Do Justice Saturday.” “The Love Mercy Sunday” musical program offers some relief in the
form of entertainment. The Candlelight Walk, on Sunday, symbolizes “Walking Humbly with God.” Both of Monday’s keynote speakers, Minister Judy Mays and the Rev. Jeffery Johnson, will direct their speeches to the same topic. The schedule of events is as follows: * “Do Justice Saturday” at 10 a.m. on Jan. 19 at Muncie Central High School, where Jemison will present distinguished student awards. * Banquet in Cardinal Hall at Ball State University. Appetizers and conversation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by dinner from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The guest speaker, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., is Stolle, author of Practicing Therapeutic
Jurisprudence: Law as a Helping Profession. * Then, on Jan. 20, people are invited to attend “Mercy Sunday” services at churches of their choice. * At 4 p.m. the same day, downtown High Street United Methodist Church will be the site of the Woodgett-directed community choir. The choir will perform contemporary selections, as well as favorite oldies. * A liturgical dance troop, High Praise, will also perform. * “Walk Humbly Monday,” on Jan. 21, will kick off at 7 a.m. at downtown First Merchants Bank with a prayer breakfast. The speaker will be Mays. The following activities, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Central High School there will be the
following events: * Minister Terrance Bridges, a Gates Scholar at Taylor University, will lead a youth-oriented worship service. * A skit by the Social Justice Committee of Christian Ministers and actor John Young-El will be presented. * An adult workshop titled “Privileged Walk” * 45-minute workshops and King-sized activities for Elementary through high school students. * Pizza lunch At 6:30 p.m. there will be a candle light walk from Muncie Central High School to Christ Temple Church. The evening celebration, featuring Pastor Jeffery Johnson of Morning Star Baptist Church in Indianapolis, will be the evening speaker.
