type of language and behavior has infected our department,” said Gainer. “They embarrassed themselves and insulted this department. This type of conduct will not be tolerated in this agency.” Joyner ends BET, Viacom boycotts WASHINGTON, D.C. —Saying that “we’re
moving on at this point,” nationally syndicated radio deejay Tom Joyner Tuesday ended a 5 day listener protest of Black Entertainment Television and parent company Viacom, after BET fired Joyner commentator Tavis Smiley from his “BET Tonight” host job. “We have (other) issues to address,” said
Joyner on “The Tom Joyner Morning Show.” Joyner’s comments came after Smiley, who has appeared during the program’s morning rush hour for more than 3 years, thanked the “BET Tonight” viewers who “watched when they put me on, and wrote when they took me off.” Since Joyner
announced the campaign last Thursday, some of his most popular guest, many of whom also had appeared on “BET Tonight” during Smiley’s tenure, have talked on-air about strategies from the public to show it displeasure with BET. Scholar-journalist Michael Eric Dyson, appearing on the program
Tuesday, said BET officials still have a lot of questions to answer. “If you had no problem with Tavis before the white people owned you, why do you have a problem with Tavis after the white people own you?” he asked Joyner. BET was sold to Viacom, a white media conglomerate, last fall.
Religion, mother compel Evans to be community activist
by Tara Carter Carolyn Evans, a graduate of South Side High School and mother of seven children, wants to do everything she can to make the community better; especially for the youth. Despite her accomplishments and dedication to the community, Evans said that she was not expecting to be chosen to be a Muncie Times Outstanding Citizen. “I was very shocked and very honored and I just want to say thank you for the opportunity to participate in such an event,” she said. Evans has worked at New Venture Gear, since June of 1999. She is also an assistant director of the children’s church at Union Missionary Baptist Church; where she’s been a member since 1986. She and the Children’s pastor director, Minister Judy Mays, work on a curriculum for the children and their parents. Evans has also received an award from her church for bringing in the most new members. Evans said that her
mother has been such an inspiration in her life ever since she was a child. She said that she has always encouraged her to help other people and always to trust in God. “My mother is a very strong, independent person. She is also a very caring and loving individual. And no matter what life throws her way, she always overcomes it. She would emphasize that God is your help. She always said the darkest day is right before dawn and I had some dark days. So I always think about that,” said Evans. Evans also said that there are many things that she would like to see done in her community. She is going to do everything she can to get them accomplished. She would like to see her community develop and become more united. She said she would also like to see more activities for the youth to participate in. “There are not many things available for our youth and I would like to get involved in developing those things,” Evans said. Evans would afso like
Evans
to get children involved in learning foreign languages at a very young age so that they have an
advantage. She said, “I just don’t want kids to be left out, in school and in the real world.” Evans would like to be able to help people stand on their own and to depend on God for whatever they need. “I would like to actively bring people to that point of using God as their source and their power,” she said. It is important for Evans to stay involved
with the community and help whenever she can because she said, “It makes a better person of you. It helps you a lot when you know that you’ve done something good for someone else.” She said that the advice that she would give to someone and the words that she tries to live by are, “Keep your eyes on Jesus. He will be your strength.”
