Indiana opens Mideast trade office in Israel

INDIANAPOLIS- Indiana businesses now have a new resource to help export their products to the Middle East. Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan announced that the state has opened its 13th international trade office: the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office. The Israel-based office, which serves as a liaison to the International Trade Division of the Indiana Department of Commerce, was opened due to customer demand. It is contracted to Atid EDI, Ltd. (Economic Developers for Israel), a consulting organizations of Israeli professionals born and trained in the United States. “This is an important development for Indiana’s efforts in the international marketplace,” said Kernan, who is director of the Department of Commerce. “The region is a strong market for technology goods and infrastructure development equipment and services, and Indiana businesses can take advantage of those opportunities. “Hoosier exports continue to grow, and this will help us build on that momentum.” The office provides contacts, research and other management and marketing services. Additional office functions include: • Processing all inquiries from Commerce or Indiana businesses • Connecting Indiana businesses with Middle Eastern cities in R&D and other activities designed to

increase business and create jobs in the state. • Linking Indiana companies with accessible Mediterranean markets. • Conveying information on regional business interest seeking joint ventures, marketing or distribution arrangements. The office is located in the center of Israel, where 40 percent of the population lives and where most business is conducted. It maintains connections with all government offices, the American embassy and other organizations structured to provide services aimed at increasing trade. Through agreements with other firms in the region, the office also covers Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. Indiana’s other international offices are located in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa and Taiwan. In 1999, Indiana exports reached nearly $14 billion. In the first three quarters of 2000, Hoosier exports totaled $12.3 billion, another record setting pace.
