JCAHO accreditation proof the system works
Three CHS entities received accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in November. Ball Memorial Hospital, BMH Hospice and CHS Homecare were each surveyed by JCAHO teams early last month. They received preliminary scores of 86,94, and 92 respectively. JCAHO is the nation's leading healthcare standards-setting agency. The organization evaluates and accredits nearly 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Since 1951, the Joint Commission has been recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that indicates an organization meets or exceeds healthcare's highest performance standards. Receiving such high scores was especially rewarding since JCAHO raised the bar this year and its surveys are more rigorous. "Our people should be commended," said Thomas Gardiner, MD, executive vice president and COO, Cardinal Health System. "They did a fabulous job. During a period when JCAHO surveyors are making it a point to conduct the most stringent surveys possible, every area we had surveyed from the hospital, to homecare to hospice received high marks. And we did it in a two-week span. That says a lot about our organization. 1 don't think you can ask for much more than that."
