Government News Gyure joins race for 2nd Congressional District seat
Ron Gyure, the former chief of staff to U. S. Rep. Phil Sharp announced his candidacy for Congress from Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District, which Sharp used to hold. “I believe that my experience working on Capitol Hill, in the Indiana Statehouse and in Muncie’s neighborhoods have given me a unique understanding and knowledge to be effective for the people of the 2nd District,” Gyure said. Gyure spoke of his work throughout the 2nd District, including working different congressional committees with Sharp to secure funding for such projects as the widening of State Route 67 near Muncie and Columbus’ Mills Race Park and Front Door Projects. He also spoke about his work in providing computer training to
workers furloughed at BorgWarner and in helping low-to-moderate-income families become homeowners through the Muncie Urban Enterprise Association. Thank you for coming out this evening! It is great to see so many good friends, many of whom go back to 1976, when I first arrived in Delaware County. In those days we assembled under the banner of a thoughtful and decent man named Phil Sharp who served the people of our area in Congress for 20 years. “Not only was Phil Sharp my boss, but he was also a friend and a mentor. From him, I saw how an elected official was a public servant, obliged to seek out diverse views, to make logical decisions, and to maintain a dialogue with his constituents. His openness and commitment to service left an indelible imprint on me.”

“Many of us here tonight have worked together on a wide range of activities. We worked together on issues relating to the development of Gillespie Towers where senior citizens today live in comfort and
safety near downtown Muncie,” he said. “When Phil Sharp announced his retirement, it was the relationships that I had with many of you and the importance of giving people the needed tools to succeed in their every day lives that caused me to want to come back to Indiana rather than remain in Washington, D. C. Muncie and East Central Indiana had become my home.” He managed Sharp’s congressional offices in Muncie and in Richmond, as well as his mobile office, which traveled throughout the 2nd District to hear constituents’ concerns. “We must provide the people of the 2nd District with the tools to succeed,” said Gyure. “Meaningful health care reform, protecting Social Security, prescription drug GYURE FROM PAGE 36
