UNCF raises a record $13.5 million for year 2000 scholarships

FAIRFAX, Va.—The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) launched the new millennium by surpassing last year’s record and raising about $13.5 million in cash and pledges during its annual fund-raising television special: “An Evening of Stars: A Celebration of Education Excellence” which aired Jan. 8 and 9 nationwide. This year’s total represents a 2 percent increase over last year’s total. “This achievement was made possible due to the enthusiastic assistance of our loyal supporters, celebrity hosts, performers, corporate sponsors and television stations,” said William H. Gray, III, president and chief executive officer of UNCF. “The $13.5 million will help thousands of deserving students, who, without the aid of UNCF, would not be able to earn a college education and achieve their goals.” National viewership for the broadcast was up 8 percent over last year’s show. About 70 top television stations in every major television market broadcast the television special, which included network affiliates of ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX,

WB and UPN. Also independents, such as USSB satellite and cable network BET, aired the show. The 4-hour television special was hosted by Lou Rawls, Debbie Allen, Star Jones and Lynn Whitfield. Highlights included performances by Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Barry White. Other performances were given by the O’Jays, Chaka Khan and The Stylistics. There were inspirational words of support from Quincy Jones, retired Gen. Colin Powell, Tom Joyner and Barry Bonds. Compelling portraits and personal testimonials emphasized the many success stories of the organization’s students, alumni and UNCF member colleges and universities. Emmy Award-winner Louis J. Horvitz returned to direct and produce the UNCF television special. “An Evening of Stars” also saluted UNCF’s corporate partners for their vital role in providing resources that enable UNCF to provide much needed scholarships and educational programs.

Lugar salutes 10th anniversary of Mandela’s freedom

“Today mark’s the 10th anniversary of Nelson Mandela being released from prison, after being held for 27 years because of his leadership in opposing apartheid.” “By 1994, Mandela was elected president of South Africa. He came up to Capitol Hill in October, 1994 to thank U. S. Sen. Dick Lugar and others for their leadership in passing legislation that united the world against apartheid, eventually ending it and leading to Mandela’s freedom. Lugar’s legislation was successful. Mandela was released 4 years after its enactment. By 1991 South Africa had met all the terms for lifting the sanctions. The Bush administration lifted the sanctions that year. “South African progress on eliminating apartheid was truly miraculous. In 1986 there was no hope that the government would change. The 1986 legislation

galvanized the parties to take action. The people of South Africa get full credit in working toward their future. The moral leadership of Mandela was critical to avoiding a bloody civil war that had been widely predicted in 1986,” Lugar said. Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize with former South African President F. W. de Klerk, the man who ordered his release. Lugar sponsored legislation to present Mandela with the Congressional Gold Medal, which he received at the U. S. Capitol in September 1998. The 1986 Lugar legislation put in place sanctions targeted on the government of South Africa until apartheid was ended and Mandela was released from jail. The bill was approved by a vote overriding President Reagan’s veto, 78-21, on Aug. 15,1986.
