I have seen laser surgery advertised as a way to treat cataracts. Is this the best and safest way to remove cataracts today? Even though laser surgery is aggressively advertised for several eye diseases, as well as for refractive surgery, it is not yet available for cataract surgery. The laser probe is under development, which will allow the removal of cataracts after they are melted by the laser, but this technology is investigational in nature and not available for patient treatment. Obviously the advantages of using laser energy to break up a cataract are considerable, including a smaller incision and potentially less trauma to the eye. This technology is currently under development, and it will be years before it is widely accepted. The time tested and currently most effective method for removing cataracts, is by using ultrasound energy to break up and remove cataracts from inside the eye. The refinement of this procedure has led to the decrease of operating time to less than 10 minutes, and the ability of the patient to resume normal activities after cataract surgery, with good vision immediately after the surgery. It will take a long time for the laser to catch up with the ultrasonic probe and match its safety and success rate, which is currently over 99% in the hands of experienced surgeons.
