Bass says races are coming together in Muncie
Dorthea Bass describes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day that is set aside for people to honor him and the strides he made for all people in civil rights. Bass said that her hope is for this day to be nationally recognized by everyone. She said as a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church and worshiping the same God with members of a
different race has allowed her to experience the dream that Dr. King had. She said that there have been times at work when a person of a different race may nothave wanted to be served by her, but it doesn’t happen too often. “I think we’ve grown,” Bass said. “As I look over the last 5 to 10 years, I think it’s better. On the spiritual or
religious realm, about 10 years ago, black and whites didn’t normally come together. With the Unity Services, that’s a positive.” Bass said that the closest Muncie has come to realizing King’s dream is the Unity Services, which began between Union Baptist and First Baptist churches. She also said that people could come even
closer by loving, as God loves, and treating everybody right. “Unconditional love sees no color,” Bass said. Bass described King as “very sacrificial. He gave of himself even in times when he knew he was in danger because he cared about people and their rights.” Bass said that King’s efforts have impacted her life and the lives of other
African-Americans. Because it has given us an opportunity based on the content of our character and abilities rather than the color of our skin,” said Bass. Dr. King said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ “
GIBBS FROM PAGE 31 Anderson Community School system,” Gibbs said. He said that if he could meet King today, he’d say, “I admire the passion that you had.” He would also tell him that he admires King’s courage and dream. “That was the beginning of racial barriers being broken down all around the world when they heard his dream,” said
Gibbs. Gibbs said to help realize King’s dream, he was going to the Paramount to join the citywide celebration. “I’m quite sure that all the youth and children that I come across that day I’ll educate them and let them know that if you expect somebody to change and be a better person towards you, you have to be a better person
towards them. “This young generation really has to have that message sent home to them because they believe in do unto others as they do unto you,” Gibbs said. According to Dr. King, “ We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the
tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children .”
