State Senate Democrats seek interns for 2000 INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus is accepting applications for 11 legislative internships with the year 2000 Indiana General Assembly, according to State Sen. Richard Young, Senate Democratic leader. The 3-month paid internship program, which will begin in January, is available to college juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of Indiana universities and colleges. No specific major area of study is required. Course credit is determined by each school. Selected students are considered full-time staff throughout the duration of the upcoming legislative session, which must adjourn by March 14, 2000. Each intern works directly with two senators, with the exception of one journalism major who is assigned to work with the media relations staff. Intern duties include: legislative research, bill tracking, attending committee hearings, responding to constituent inquiries and assisting senators with daily legislative activities. Good writing and research skills are required. Young said, “This is an excellent opportunity for students to see first-hand how the legislative process works, and, at the same time, provide a valuable service to legislators and the citizens of Indiana. Former interns have found this to be a very educational and worthwhile experience.” This year the Indiana General Assembly will be offering the fifth annual GTE Legislative Intern Scholarship. GTE provides four $2,500 scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to an outstanding intern from each of the four legislative caucuses at the end of session. Applicants will be selected in early November.
