Muncie mayoral hopeful meets with Gov. O’Bannon

Muncie’s Democratic mayoral candidate Ralph (Jigger) Smith Jr. recently met with Gov. O’BANNON during a forum on effective government for Indiana cities. The forum was held at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis for Indiana Democratic candidates running for mayor. Candidates and mayors from about 50 Hoosier cities were at the forum. During the day-long forum, O’BANNON met briefly with each mayoral candidate. The governor also delivered the keynote speech. O’BANNON praised Democratic mayoral candidates for discussing responsive solutions to local problems, such as education reform, highways, crime, taxes, community development, business and job growth and environmental

concerns. “You’re talking about issues that make a difference to the people of Indiana,” O’BANNON told the candidates. “We have a message that resonates with people. Your message to voters in Indiana cities has to be a vision to what the city can be — and, at the same time, show how progress can be achieved in a fiscally responsible way. “You’re serious about what you’re doing. It says a lot about you that you came to Indianapolis for a forum on effective policies for managing cities.” Candidates met with experts, including mayors, state government leaders and -private sector specialists. Smith, who is running against Mayor Dan Canan, said, “The policy forum was important because of the

opportunity to discuss issues with experts, and to also meet Gov. O’BANNON. “Democrats deliver responsive and effective local

government in Indiana communities.” Because of my meeting with Gov. O’BANNON and policy experts, I’m even more

prepared to lead Muncie toward the kind of future we want and need.”
