Carroll touts Mother’s Day mammogram program
CAMP HILL, Pa-The Rite Aid Women’s Health Foundation wants Americans to give a special gift with their Mother’s Day cards this year,- the gift of life-saving mammograms to uninsured women who cannot otherwise afford them. For the second year, the foundation is teaming up with corporate partner American Greetings to raise money for the fight against breast cancer through the sale of special celebritydesigned Mother’s Day cards. All of the money raised through the sale of the $2 cards will be donated to the foundation’s early breast cancer detection program. Mother’s Day Mammograms, which reaches out to low-income and uninsured women with an offer of free mammograms. “The facts are clear. Early detection of breast cancer saves lives. In fact,
when detected early, a woman has a 95 percent chance of survival,” said Amy Johnson, executive director of The Rite Aid Women’s Health Foundation. “But thousands of women cannot afford regular mammograms. The foundation offers a solution by connecting uninsured women with healthcare providers who offer the screenings for free.” Diahann Carroll, Peri Gilpin and Daisy Fuentes worked with American Greetings’ designers to create the special Mother’s Day cards which reflect their personal style and incorporate their feelings about motherhood. American Greetings has donated the design and production of the cards. Each of the celebrities participating in this year’s card program has a personal reason for getting involved. Stage, screen and
television legend Diahann Carroll is a breast cancer survivor herself. In fact, just last spring she Was diagnosed with the disease through her annual mammogram. Her breast cancer was detected early and she is fully recovered. But the experience has left her with a strong desire to spread the message about the importance of breast cancer early detection. “As a breast cancer survivor who owes my life to getting a mammogram, I am a passionate advocate of the importance of early detection,” Carroll said. “That’s why F ve joined this marvelous effort that so meaningfully touches the lives of women across the coun-
try.”
“Frasier” star Peri Gilpin, who portrays radio producer Roz Doyle on the Emmy-award winning comedy, is committed to encouraging women to get annual mammograms and practice monthly breast self exams. She become involved in the Mother’s Day Mammograms card program in memory of her mother, Sandra Gilpin, who lost her fight against
breast cancer.
