Kyla and Gregory are in the spotlight this issue

by Judy Mays Kyla Jacqueline Johnson, 12, is a sixth grade student at Northside Middle School where she has a 4.0 GPAon a 4.0 scale. Her favorite subject is science. Kyla is a member of the Munsyana Volleyball League, is on her school’s cheerleading squad, plays forward on the girls basketball team, plays volleyball and runs track. “In my spare time I like to read and write,” said Kyla. My role model is my mom. 1 admire everything about her. She’s a wonderful person and she encourages me.” The best advice Kyla has received is to “never give up, just keep on trying.” “I’d just give that same advice to others.” Her

favorite family activity is vacation. The best book she has read is Chicken Soup for the Teenagers Soul. Her favorite movie is “The Prince of Egypt.” Kyla said her biggest challenge is to meet the goals she sets. She attends Union Missionary Baptist Church and Greater Grace Apostolic Church. Kyla is the daughter of Troy Johnson and Kelly Rowe. ooooo Gregory Curtis Ragland, 16, is a junior at Southside High School. His favorite subject is English. Gregory has a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. He is on his school’s yearbook staff. He is

a right fielder on the baseball team and a defensive back on the football team. In his spare time Gregory likes to read and hang out with friends. He works at MCL cafeteria at the Muncie Mall. “I’d have to say my role models are my mother and my football coach, Mike Paul. “I admire my mom because she is a strong AfricanAmerican woman who sets her mind to do something and does it.” “I admire my coach because he’s strong in heart with a love for people and sports,” said Gregory. Black women on tour schedule six empowerment forums

SAN DIEGO, Calif—The 1999 African American Women on Tour (AAWOT) conference series will host “SisterSpeak Out on Preventive Health” - a forum on preventive health management for African American women in six U.S. cities, beginning in April. The forum will take place on a Saturday in each AAWOT conference city: Los Angeles April 9 to 11; Brooklyn, NY, July 9 to 11; Philadelphia, July 23 to 25; Chicago, July 30 to Aug. 11; Washington, DC Aug 20 to 22; and Atlanta, Aug 27 to 29. Heart & Soul's Editorial Director Yanick Rice Lamb will moderate the forums in all six cities. She will be joined by panelist Dr. Roxanne Rodnev, one of the nation's leading African American cardiologists, and other physicians and experts on naturopathic health management. The forums will focus on the importance of improving diets, exercising'regu-

larly, learning relaxation techniques and better time management to reduce stress, build strength and vitality, and improve the quality of life of black women and their families. Now in its ninth season, African American Women on Tour’s mission is to empower black women to take control of their wellness, physically, mentally and spiritually. AAWOT also offers a host of unique workshops on ancient African and Eastern mind, body and spirit-healing practices and exercises, including “Overcoming Stress with Meditation;” “The Positive Playzshop: A Circle of Love, Thanks, Healing and Visualization;” “The One for All and All for One Holistic Fitness Program;” and "Het Heru Healing Dance,” an African-centered dance designed to improve the functioning of female reproductive organs. Additionally, AAWOT offers a health-start breakfast and
