Leave President Clinton alone to complete his job
Now that President Clinton has, although reluctantly, admitted to his sexual misadventures, it is time for the country to look ahead and move forward. There is no need to excuse what he did with White House Intern Monica Lewinsky. Even he has admitted that it “was wrong.” Let’s hope he has learned his lesson from this sad episode. At some point we have to divert the focus from Mr. Clinton’s personal problems and confront those

office from his personal peccadilloes. That’s the way it is. This is an election year. Gubernatorial seats are at stake as are U.S. Senate and House seats as well as state legislature seats. It is natural that Mr. Clinton’s enemies will try to use his personal problems to taint all Democrats. Others will try to call for his resignation or even impeachment. While he has engaged in personal activities that are unbecoming of the high position that he holds, we remain unpersuaded by the evidence available so far that ha has done anything that would warrant impeachment or resignation. Those calling for his impeachment or resignation are, in our opinion, premature. They are probably motivated by political considerations or antiClinton or anti-Democratic Party animus. In.his time in o’ffxce Mr. Clinton has done more than preside over a robust economy and low unemployment rates. His race initiative has been a bold attempt to get the country talking about the
deteriorating of race relations in this country. Despite the efforts of detractors, this is a long-overdue effort to address one of the problems facing this rainbow country as it prepares to enter the next millennium. Racial, ethnic and gender problems will be problems for this country in the coming decades. The country’s demographic and census data show that ethnic minorities and women will dominate among those entering the job market in the next two decades. The President’s Race Initiative has helped lay the groundwork for dealing with part of that problem. Beside the economy and the race issues, Mr. Clinton has also been engaged in many other issues, including foreign policy attempts to engaged in closer ties with Africa, bring peace to Northern Ireland, bring Arabs%nd Israelis together in the Middle East and battle global terror-
ism.
It is time to get off the president’s back and let him finish the job he was elected to do. The comics have had their say. So have the naysayers. And the relentless pohtical opponents. But we have to move forward. We need to take our cue from first lady Hilary Rodham Clinton, who has chosen to stand by her man. If she is
willing to forgive her husband, who are we to judge
him?
Mr.Clinton should be judged on his handling of the country’s affairs. On that score he has done well. For this and other reasons, Mr. Clinton deserves to be allowed to complete his second term in office with dignity, respect, and honor.
