IUPUI wants to join NCAA Division I competition

INDIANAPOLIS-The intercollegiate athletics program at Indiana-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is on its way to Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Approval by the trustees of Indiana University at their meeting in New Albany, Ind., opens the door for the IUPUI Metros to join a new level of competition in the NC AA. IUPUI, which competed since 1993 as a NCAA Division II institution, is targeted for Division IAAA status by fall 1998. Classed as an independent program. IUPUFs intercollegiate athletics also will seek membership in a Division I conference. “We see the mission of intercollegiate athletics as serving the broader learning goals of the university,” said Gerald L. Bepko, IUPUI chancellor and IU vice president for long-range planning. “Athletics should enhance the total educational experience of students at IUPUI, and the move to Division I at IUPUI should bring a new sense of community to our students, faculty, staff

and alumni.”

“We will work in building a competitive, mid-range athletic program,” Moore said. “Our goal will be the formation of an intercollegiate athletics program with a sustainable budget that can provide ample opportunities for students.” Intercollegiate athletics at IUPUI dates back to 1972 with the introduction of men’s basketball. Women’s sports were implemented in 1975 and today represent six of the 12 programs. IUPUI joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1978 and competed in this affiliation

through 1992.

Competition today includes men's and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men's and women’s tennis, softball, baseball, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s swimming and diving, and additional women's sports in golf, soccer, and track and field to achieve gender equity, to make a field of 16 programs by the
