Urban League honors achieving youngsters in Los Angeles
There was a splashy affair last month in Los Angeles, the site this year of the flagship event of the National Urban League’s “Doing The Right Thing” celebration. The Los Angeles Urban League, working with more than three dozen community and civic groups and such companies as Merrill Lynch, Sears-Roebuck, State Farm Insurance, had gathered 1,100 youngsters, from pre-schoolers to those in junior high school, on the campus of the University of Southern California to be entertained by the Disney
characters and rap groups— and to be applauded for doing well in school and doing good in their communities. The praise came not only from their parents but also from stars of Hollywood and of sports, and from those who “star” in other fields—among them, Bernard Parks, new Los Angeles police chief, Karl Kani, the fashion designer, Reuben Zacarias, the city’s superintendent of schools, and Dr. Jane Pisano, a vice president and dean at the University of Southern California. The choice of a collegiate
setting was deliberate—“to plant those seeds in young minds,” said John Mack, head of the Los Angeles Urban League. “We want to make it clear to them that mediocrity is not an option for the future. They’ve got to keep pressing forward. tion”—a parade complete with marching bands and floats from schools, community organizations, hospitals, businesses, the mayor’s office and even the Black Cowboy Rodeo Association. “Our theme is ‘Great Expectations,”’ said League President Eloise Gentry. “We want our children to have great expectations of themselves and to know that we have great confidence in them.” Still further east, there was a quieter celebration that day in Toledo, Ohio, where our
newest affiliate, the Greater Toledo Urban League, is still gearing up to be fully operational. But Judy Ellis, the president of its board, didn’t wait before acting. “Why wait?” she said. “You don’t need an office to listen to children.” So, along with Urban League staffer Agretta Hester and Deborah Sims, a Toledo teacher and parent, she spent Saturday afternoon and evening having pizza and soda pop with 15 Toledo youngsters, see EQUAL on page 17
