Governor announces new Hoosier Americops programs INDIANAPOLIS-Gov. Frank O’Bannon recently said three new AmeriCorps programs will begin this fall throughout Indiana. The new programs will join other Indiana AmeriCorps programs that were renewed for an additional 17 years of service to Indiana communities. In making his announcement, O’Bannon called on Hoosiers to step forward and to give a year of their lives to service. “AmeriCorps gives people the opportunity to serve their communities,” said O’Bannon. “From tutoring studying to teaching conflict resolution, from helping the homeless to aiding the homebound elderly, Hoosiers have the chance to improve themselves by serving others.” AmeriCorps, the “domestic Peace Corps,” gets things done for communities around Indiana and the country. Beginning its fourth year of existence, over 25,000 AmeriCorps Members serve their communities across the country. All programs are designed and implemented at the local level by local non-profits, state and local agencies. Indiana has over 500 AmeriCorps positions available in over 30 Indiana cities and towns. AmeriCorps is open to anyone: who is 17 or older; has a high school diploma; and is an American citizen or legal resident alien. Full-time and part-time positions are available. Full-time members give 1,700 hours of community service, and earn: an $8,300 living allowance; health insurance; child care if they qualify; and a $4,725 educational award that may be used to pay the cost of higher education or to repay student loans. Anyone interested in joining AmeriCorps should call the Indiana Commission on Community Service & Volunteerism at (317) 233-4273 or write to 302 West Washington Street, Room E220, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 to receive an application packet and list of Indiana’s AmeriCorps programs.
