Governor designates Oct 8 as Stop Violence Day

Indianapolis-Gov. Frank O’Bannon signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 8 Stop America’s Violence Everywhere (SAVE) Day in Indiana. “I want to help change the horrible picture that violence presents in our children’s lives,” said Patricia Deporter, Portage, Ind., who led this initiative with Indiana State Medical Association Alliance (ISMAS-A) President Patty Lackey. After forming a council to help coordinate the efforts of organizations interested in ending violence in Lake County, DePorter approached

O’Bannon about declaring a state-wide SAVE Day. The governor was visiting the Crisis Center for teens, Gary, Ind., where DePorter is a board member. She explained her motivation, “Violence is rampant in northwest Indiana and the SAVE program has many proactive projects to help break the chain of violence.” The county chapters of the ISMAS-A work in conjunction with the American Medical Association Alliance in the SAVE campaign. These county alliances supply local elementary schools with non-violent

conflict resolution educational materials. In 1998 alone, they distributed over 7,500 “Hands are Not For Hitting” place mats and over 35,000 / Can Choose coloring books.

Eight alliances also have adopted local shelters for domestic violence victims. The ISMA-A is a volunteer force of over 1,700 physician spouses dedicated to improv-

ing the health of Indiana citizens. Its 23 county alhances participate in a variety of health-related community service initiatives.

Senator proposes Underground Railroad Bill

CHICAGO—Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun, the only black member of the U.S. Senate, has proposed a bill that would remember the black Holocaust in the United States by marking safehouses that

gave refuge to runaway slaves. Moseley-Braun said her legislation, the National Underground Railroad Network Freedom Act, would authorize the National Park Service to establish a network of sites to

highlight the sacrifices made by slaves and the whites who helped them. According to the senator, the Park Service has documented the 38 Underground Railway sites in Illinois alone.
